Flagler, a white man in his 30s, is released from the Columbia Heights State Penitentiary. He straps on a digital wristband and encounters a cleaning bot that speaks funny, with code numbers in front of all its' sentences. The cleaning bot starts to interrogate him, but lets him go. It's strange to Flagler that a cleaning bot would ask him any questions.
Flagler hops into a taxi driven by a bot and that bot is also speaking with the numbers in front of its sentences and it interrogates him, too. He tells the bot to take him to his old home address. As they drive, much of the city is boarded up, closed or unkempt. Things are going to hell.
As they go through Flagler's old neighborhood, he has flashbacks to when he played and lived in the area as a kid.
He arrives at his old address and he pays the bot with his digital wristband. No one is home at the house. He flashes back to the day he was arrested at home.
He gets another taxi. This bot also speaks with the weird number thing. As the bot drops him at a new address, it says "have a nice death." Flagler questions the bot, but it says something else. Did he hear the bot wrong?
Flagler walks up to his friend Roger Muir's house, but he finds Muir dead and lying in the doorway. Two medical bots are dealing with the body. When the bots see Flagler, they try to get him. They are slow, though, and Flagler easily outruns them.
But now ALL the houses and street lights and anything with a computer rings out an alarm. Bots from all around start to chase Flagler. He runs away from the lit parts of the city and into a more shadowy area with no alarms or bots. In fact all the buildings in this area are dark. Bots follow him, but he hides from their sight.
He turns a corner and sees a light above a pub, O'Halloran's. He makes sure none of the bots see him and he goes inside. The light goes off when he goes inside.
The bar is empty except for the bartender/owner O'Halloran. He gives Flagler a shot of Jameson. Flagler downs it while O'Halloran questions him extensively.
Flagler gets another drink. And another. Then he gets a beer chaser.
Flagler asks O'Halloran what's going on with the bots. He's getting more and more agitated, but O'Halloran calms him down. O'Halloran says the bots have a glitch. The numbers thing is based on their original programming. He says that the numbers thing was just the start of it. Then the bots started killing people AND animals.
O'Halloran reveals that the only reason he hasn't been killed is that he made a deal with the bots. He tricks people and the bots kill them. The bots let him live.
Two killbots come inside and focus on Flagler. They flank him and drive him into the pool room where they kill him.
Outside, the light above the bar turns on again, to attract the next customer.
