The year is 2043. At Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C., there is a debate about "Supers vs. Humans." The debate is between a Black man, Rustin Jonas, and a white woman, Raven Benjamin. Rustin is pro-supers and pro-freedom. Raven says that supers have an unfair advantage. Rustin says she's using a straw man, as only one person was ever caught using powers unfairly. Raven appeals to a group of women in the audience, The Sisterhood, who are survivors of those killed in super-powered battles. Rustin complains that the purge of superheroes was like another Civil War. Raven says one of the supers killed her father. Rustin complains about supers being used to hunt each other, being tortured and killed. Raven wants a world without supers. Rustin says the American dream died when we started hunting and killing supers just for existing. The crowd wildly approves of Rustin.
Afterwards, Jean Peters grabs Rustin's hand and pulls him to a private place. Jean gives Rustin oral sex, even though Rustin is a bit hesitant. Once it's over, Rustin says that was the last time. Jean rejects the break-up.
At Rustin's house, Kyle Jonathan watches news about the debate. He sees Jean and Rustin walk off together and gets upset. He turns off the TV and goes to the basement to work out.
Flashback to a private farm in Maryland in 2020, police cars surround the barn, guns at the ready. Officers Julio Williams and Teddy Drake are the lead officers. They are scared of whatever is inside the barn.
Inside the barn is Paul Benjamin, aka the Red Dagger. Towering above him is Kyle, aka, the Patriot. Kyle clearly has Paul beaten, but the villain gloats. Paul taunts Kyle, particularly with the blood that covers his hands and costume. Paul compares himself to various serial killers and Kyle grows more and more angry. Paul admits to killing a woman and a group of LGBTQ kids. He licks the blood and Kyle loses control. Kyle launches at Paul with all his power and the screen fades to black.
Kyle staggers out of the barn, covered in blood. A young Raven and her mother know that Paul is dead. Julio and the other cops tell Kyle to freeze, but he flies away. The cops go inside the barn and Paul lays on the ground, bloody and battered. The hay catches on fire and a drum of flammable liquid is about to explode. In the rafters, a camera from Barnyard.com records.
Julio rushes outside and tells everyone the Patriot killed the Red Dagger. Young Raven cries, but her mother doesn't. The barn explodes and those nearby have minor injuries. The Barnyard.com camera flies into the woods unseen. The barn burns. Everyone leaves.
A time-lapse shot of the exterior of the barn shows that the camera stays laying in the woods for multiple seasons.
Julio quits the police force and becomes a prison guard at the Chesapeake Supermax Detention Center in Baltimore.
Back at the barn, a kid on a dirt bike wanders the property and finds the Barnyard.com camera in the woods. He turns it over and sees there is a $500 reward for returning the camera. He puts it in his backpack and takes it home. He and his parents mail the camera to the address on the side and he gets his reward. The camera sits in a post-office box, collecting dust.
Back in the present, Kyle works with a punching bag. He's worked out here a lot and there are dents in the reinforced steel walls from his punches. Rustin gets home and calls out for Kyle, but Kyle doesn't answer, he just keeps working the bag. His eyes start to glow a little bit red. Rustin comes downstairs, but Kyle is very curt with him and grows redder as he works the bag.
Rustin says he ran into Irene and her wife Maria. And that they are coming to dinner. Kyle gets upset, he hates surprises. Rustin points out that he hasn't seen his sister in a long time and Kyle hits the punching bag so hard it breaks. Kyle gets angrier and angrier until the doorbell rings. Rustin goes to answer the door and asks if Kyle is coming. Kyle calls Rustin his "warden" as he says he's coming.
Rustin opens the front door as Kyle towels off. At the front door are Irene and Maria Jonathan. Kyle stares like he barely recognizes his sister and she forces him to hug her. Maria introduces herself and when Rustin shakes her hand, the tension in her shoulders releases visibly.
Later they sit around the dining table eating take out and the dish Irene brought with her. Irene asks how long it's been since they had dinner together. Rustin can't remember the last time. Irene's dish is their mother's recipe for Quack and Mac. Rustin and Maria aren't into it, but Kyle and Irene love it. Kyle offers a salad with vegetables from his garden, a hobby he took up while stuck at home.
Maria asks Kyle if he misses being a superhero. He doesn't. He would've quit of his own accord. Maria remembers him as one of the good guys. Maria asks how Kyle and Rustin met. Kyle played football for the Patriots and got his superhero name from the team, the media gave it top him. Rustin played, too, but neither was openly gay when they played. They didn't start dating each other until after they stopped playing.
Irene and Maria prepare to leave. Irene says she loved seeing Kyle again. Kyle agrees. Rustin congratulates himself for thinking of it in the first place. Irene tells Kyle to keep in touch and Rustin tells her he'll make sure it happens. The women leave.
Rustin and Kyle's kitchen is expensive and large. Kyle loads the dishwasher while Rustin puts away the food. Kyle knocks over a glass and breaks it. Rustin tells him to watch himself and Kyle replies that Rustin should watch HIMself. The tension in the room is palpable. Kyle asks Rustin who that guy was that he saw on TV with Rustin. Rustin doesn't know what Kyle is talking about, which makes Kyle angry. He goes back to the basement to work out.
In the basement, Kyle works out with a heavy bag. He punches the steel wall, making new dents. His wedding ring, which he forgot to take off, breaks. He stops punching, drops to his knees and sobs.
Flashback to "After the Incident," 2020 and beyond. A news reporter announces that police and military are searching for the hero formerly known as the Patriot, aka Kyle Jonathan. Later, Kyle hides in a homeless camp outside D.C. Later, Raven talks against supers on a news show. Later, Kyle is fully homeless as he steals food from trash cans and hides from other people. Later, Rustin gets a letter from his mother, who gives him the deed to the home he grew up in. Later, a news announcer talks about a government program to "level the playing field" with supers.
Later, the police come to Rustin's new house looking for Kyle, but Rustin says he hasn't seen him in years. They tell him to contact them if he shows up and give him business cards. After they leave, he throws the cards in the trash.
Later, a woman on the Holographic Larry King show denies that a new technology was created from the slaughter and vivisection of supers. Later, Kyle passes through a magical barrier into a homeless encampment for supers. Carol leads Kyle outside the homeless supers camp. She tells him that the camp isn't safe anymore and gives him so money. She says that the authorities are coming for the camp. He leaves.
Later, Raven gets President Donald Trump Jr. to sign legislation banning supers. Later, the police check Rustin's house for Kyle again. Later, Kyle moves into a real homeless encampment. Kyle secretly gives money to other homeless people. Later, a shock jock spreads conspiracies about the disappearance of supers.
Later, Rustin writes a letter thanking his mother for the house. Later, Kyle sees a newspaper headline that the last of the camps for supers has been cleared out. Carol is among those captured and presumed dead.
Later, Kyle sees Rustin on the street, walking up to Bobbi's building. Rustin doesn't see him and drops off the letter for Bobbi. Kyle follows Rustin.
Later, Rustin sees the cops coming to ask him about Kyle again, but this time, they drive on past without stopping. Later, Rustin watches the news and sees a debate that notes supers haven't been seen in six years.
Later, Rustin goes to the mailbox and sees Kyle hiding in the woods. Rustin crosses the street and the two men embrace and kiss.
In the present, Kyle is dressed to leave. He tries to talk to Rustin, but he's busy on the phone. Kyle goes out the back door and sneaks off the property. He has his broken wedding ring in his hand. He jumps into Carol's car. They drive through the city, which is increasingly run-down and anti-super. Government buildings are protected by extremely militaristic police and supercops in armored suits. Neither of them has seen any of the other supers in years.
They drive to Moon's Jewelers in New Baltimore. She's shocked that's where he's venturing out to visit after all these years. He's going to try to be incognito and they set a rendezvous point as she drops him off. The sidewalk is busy with people attending Comic-Con. He goes into the jewelry store.
Kyle stands at an intersection outside Come-Con. It's raining heavily and he's almost meditating as the rain falls on him. A man, Arnie, tries to change his tire in the rain, but can't. Traffic is coming at him and he tells his young daughter he's almost got it. A red Lamborghini rounds a corner and doesn't see Arnie. He's about to be killed.
Kyle uses his powers and leaps into action. He protects Arnie with an energy field, which launches the Lamborghini towards the Comic-Con crowd. Kyle dives towards the crowd and creates an energy field that catches the car. Everyone safely gets out of the way and he slowly lowers the car to the road.
Sirens wail in the distance. The crowd cheers for Kyle and phones recorded the action. Kyle is already live on the news that appears on screens outside the convention center. A super sighting is a MAJOR news story. The crowd gawks at him and then closes in, trying to touch him. He has to use his powers to escape their clutches.
Police cars arrive and he runs down a side street. The news has already identified Kyle as the Patriot. Kyle sees Carol's car and flags her down. He gets in.
Flashback to 2028, Kyle and Rustin eat a joyless dinner. Kyle tosses a card from the Curiose Curiosity Shop onto the table. He asks Rustin what it is. Rustin says it's his but he doesn't know why he kept it. He said he found the shop when he was a player. He went in, but didn't buy anything. Kyle keeps pressing and Rustin asks him why it's such a big deal. Kyle says the shop sells powers. Like items that give humans super powers. Kyle thinks that powers are a curse, he didn't want his and he doesn't think others should get them. He hates powers and people with them. Rustin promises not to go to the shop. Kyle balls up the card and throws it away. He goes to the basement and Rustin sort of apologizes.
Shortly after 4 a.m., Rustin goes to the kitchen trash can and fishes out the card. He puts it in his pocket.
The next morning, Kyle is getting ready to work out. Kyle kisses Rustin, who just woke up. After Kyle leaves, Rustin pulls out a box from under the bed. He puts the Curiose card in a stack of other business cards. He puts the box back under the bed.
Outside, a large van pulls up and parks just beyond the range of Rustin's external security cameras. Inside a deployment van, a supercop SWAT Team prepares to capture Kyle. The commanding officers Keller tells them what to do. Jaxon was a fan of the Patriot and they all have eyes on him as a possible weak link. They call Kyle a killer and prepare to go get him.
The supercops exit the van dressed in mechasuits at least a dozen feet tall. More vans arrive with standard, but heavily-armored, troops. The media and other onlookers also gather. Inside, Kyle snaps awake when he hears the sirens. He wakes Rustin up and turns on the TV. He tells Rustin to get dressed, because "they" are coming.
The supercops are in formation that blocks any escape. Behind them are hundreds of cops, ambulances, fire trucks, media trucks, onlookers, kids. Keller tells the unarmored cops to stay back. Rustin tells Kyle he doesn't have to do this, but Kyle says he does. Novar fires her flamethrower and Kyle jumps in front of it to block it from getting Rustin. Keller yells at her for starting the fight. Keller tells everyone to run and hides inside the van.
Kyle launches into Novar, tearing her suit in half. She's alive, but still moving. Everyone except the supercops runs. Xavin blasts blue energy at Kyle, but Kyle isn't hurt. Kyle flies straight at him and Xavin tries to dive out of the way. It doesn't work and Kyle drives Xavin into the sewage tunnel below. Xavin calls for a medic.
Jaxon tries to find Kyle, but can't. Kyle flies up from the hole in the ground and flies Jaxon into the air. The suits can't fly, but are very durable. Kyle drops Jaxon, who smashes through the ground and into the sewer. Gaveedra tries to trap Kyle with an electrified net, but Kyle rips it off and smashes Gaveedra and Chavez into each other. Kyle punches through Gaveedra's face plate, knocking her out.
Kyle prepares to take out a frightened Chavez and flashes back to when he killed Paul Benjamin. Kyle drops to his knees and surrenders. Keller runs from the van and hits Kyle with a steel baton, but it bends when it hits him. Soldiers cautiously put shackles on Kyle and walk him to the van. Rustin screams at them as they do.
Flashback to 2015: Kyle is watching football highlights. He calls his agent and quits the game. He throws the phone in the trashcan and leaves. In the coming years, Kyle grows as a celebrity: he dates female models, he experiments with playing other sports, but he isn't good at them, he goes on a spacewalk, he appears on the Ellen show where he comes out as gay, he dates male models, he flirts with salesmen, he learns mountain climbing.
He falls a few feet then he hits another outcropping and bounces across to the other side of the crevasse. He crashes through a thin wall and falls a few more feet to a cave floor. Overall he only falls 10-15 feet, but when he hits the rock, the bag containing all his supplies is ripped off and falls into the crevasse. When he lands in the cave, his ankle snaps and he screams in agony. The cave is really shaky. Rocks fall here and there, as if the whole thing might collapse into the crevasse.
Kyle touches his ankle in agony. A red glow appears on the wall across from him. An alien language appears and somehow he can understand it. He reads the words aloud as the cave prepares to collapse. He falls backward and hurts his ankle again. The whole wall begins to glow red, but Kyle is lost in a fit of pain and rage.
The red glow surrounds Kyle's ankle and he stops screaming. A small glowing red space probe falls from behind the wall. The red glow envelops his body and his ankle heals. The probe crashes to the rocks below. Kyle is in control now and gently lowers himself to the ground using the red energy. A large chunk of rock falls towards his head, but it bounces off the energy feel. He goes to find the probe, but discovers it turning into vapor. He flies away.
Back in the present, Rustin drinks wine as Irene scans news stories. Rustin says he does not believe what they are saying about Kyle. Irene agrees that Kyle doesn't have murderous hate in him. Irene says she'll be there to support Rustin through all of this. She'll sleep in bed with her wife, but she'll be there to support Rustin otherwise. He thanks her and asks what he can do. She tells him to go talk to Kyle. Rustin says he won't listen, but she says Rustin is the only person he'll listen to.
Later, Rustin moves towards his car when Jean runs up and hugs him and tries to kiss him. Rustin recoils, hoping Irene hasn't seen. He demands to know what Jean is doing at his house. Rustin pushes Jean away and calls him insane. Jean says he loves Rustin, but Rustin rejects him and threatens Jean to stay away.
Flashback to Boston Common in 2018, Rustin and a group of his friends are having a picnic on the common. A man comes running past them carrying a big bag of comic books. He drops one and it's a copy of X-Men #1. He's dressed up in a super villain costume and is known as Anolis.
A woman calls for someone to stop Anolis, he's a thief. Rustin stands up to act, but Kyle arrives, dressed as the Patriot. He grabs Anolis and flies him very high in the sky. He drops the comics. Kyle hands Anolis over to the police. Kyle and Rustin make eye contact and don't break it. As the police and crowds gather around, Rustin accidentally bumps into Kyle. They introduce themselves. Rustin gives Kyle his card and phone number.
Back in the present, the Chesapeake Supermax prison has been built and fortified to hold supers. Rustin and Kyle face each other in a private meeting room. Kyle is heavily shackled. Rustin's prison escort is Julio. Rustin and Kyle kiss. Rustin says Kyle could just break out if he wanted to. But he won't do it because he's guilty. Rustin says that's for a court to decide and Kyle says he'll let them decide then. Rustin asks if Kyle is coming home. Kyle says no. Julio walks back in, their time is over. Rustin says they haven't had 30 minutes, but Julio says it doesn't matter, the place is going on lock down. Some kind of big wig is coming in. Rustin is upset, but Kyle wants to comply. Rustin tells Kyle he loves him and Julio escorts him out.
Raven stands outside the gate waiting. Rustin walks out and she accidentally bumps into him. Raven accuses him of trying to break his teammate out. Rustin tells her she's always wrong about everything and leaves. Julio walks out of the prison and joins Julio.
Julio drives while Raven stares out the window. Raven and Julio engage in small talk. Raven asks what Rustin was doing there. Julio thinks she cares more about what Rustin was doing than seeing him. He thinks she doesn't care about him. He asks if she's using him and she asks if he really cares. He doesn't. He asks what she wants from him. She says maybe she just likes him. Or he's just good in bed. She says what she really cares about is justice. He asks her to leave it alone because she already won. She says not yet. Raven badgers him about how far he'll go in pursuit of justice or for her. Would he go all the way? He says yes.
Flashback to 2004: Raven's house is nice, but not fancy. Her father has a Bush-Cheney campaign sign. Inside, her father Paul Benjamin, aka the Red Dagger, paints a miniature figurine. He sets it on a table that has a World War II theme, including depictions of Nazis. He describes a war strategy to his daughter that involves sacrificing troops. Raven asks about the lives of the sacrificed. Paul pulls out a broken-off radio antenna, extends it and smacks her hand three times, hard enough to make her bleed.
She does her best to keep her cries hidden. Paul gets hydrogen peroxide and treats her wounds, arguing that men who are soldiers knew what they were getting themselves into. They knew they would potential sacrifices. They fulfilled their role and stayed in their place. He says they will be repaid for their sacrifice. Raven asks Paul if he's going to win this time. He says he always win. Once she leaves, the camera pulls back to reveal that Paul is directing the Nazis against the allies.
Back in the present, Rustin tells Irene that Kyle is staying in prison. She asks if it's forever and he says it sure seems like it. She asks if Kyle could've possibly done it. Rustin says no, Kyle isn't a murderer. She asks what will happen if he's convicted. Rustin says he won't be. She pushes harder, though, and he says that he will get the death penalty. She says they'll have to prove him innocent. Rustin is at a loss about what to do. Irene says her cousin knows a guy who really knows his shit.
Irene's cousin, Johnny Clay, meets with the two of them. He's a private investigator. They ask him to find out what all Kyle was up to. Clay asks how deep a dive. Rustin says they don't know. Irene clarifies that he might have been into stuff they don't know about. Johnnie says it's no problem.
One day later, Johnnie says that he discovered that a safe deposit box exists in Kyle's name and hands them a brochure for Barnyard.com. Back at home, Rustin gets out of his car and walks toward the house carrying the receipt and the Barnyard.com brochure.
Wearing a police officer uniform (not corrections), Julio pays Rustin a visit. Rustin knows better, though, and doesn't answer Julio's leading questions. Julio says he's keeping his eye on Rustin. Rustin easily outsmarts him and Julio fails in his attempt to intimidate or get any info from Rustin.
At the law firm of Kirby and Ditko, Rustin asks Kirby for information about Barnyard.com. Kirby slides an envelope across his desk to Rustin. Rustin pulls a key out of the envelope. Rustin and Kirby shake hands. Rustin walks out the door.
Raven does some research about Barnyard.com and discovers that the URL is owned by Kyle Jonathan. Rustin drives to the Maximum Security Deposit Center. Julio drives Raven towards the same location, but they're behind Rustin. Raven reveals that Barnyard.com was a failed website that only lasted about a year. Julio and Raven figure out that Barnyard.com must have had a camera in Paul Benjamin's barn. Direct evidence that Kyle is a murderer. Rustin arrives and opens the safety deposit box. Inside is the Barnyard.com camera.
At home, Rustin surfs the web to learn more about the camera. He opens the camera up and pulls out a memory chip. He scrolls through folders to find the date of Paul's death. There is one massive video. He watches it and sees that the blood-covered Paul, dressed as the Red Dagger, comes into the barn. He starts a fire. Kyle arrives as the Patriot. Rustin watch Paul lick blood from his hand. Kyle launches forward and kills Paul.
Rustin takes the memory chip outside and throws it on the grill. He douses it in lighter fluid and sets it on fire. It quickly melts and Rustin makes sure that nothing is left of the chip.
Raven and Julio arrive at the Deposit Center and get a manager to open the safe deposit box to find it empty.
Irene arrives at Rustin's house and they drink heavily. Rustin says he doesn't think he can save Kyle. Irene doesn't understand what changed. She tells him to get some help. He tries to say there isn't anyone to help, but then he goes to his bedroom and pulls out the stack of business cards. He gets his mom's card and the one for the Curiose shop.
Flashback to 2019: Rustin and his mother eat dinner at a fancy dining room table. Around the table are various other older couples, one of which has a daughter Rustin's age. Bobbi talks to the daughter, Karolina, asking what her future plans are. She's going to travel for six months, then she's going to Harvard.
Bobbi asks if Karolina has a boyfriend. Karolina squeezes Rustin's hand under the table. She's just exploring before she starts law school. Rustin wants to make an announcement and Bobbi isn't happy about it. He tries to make the announcement anyway, but she shuts it down.
Bobbi and the other guests return to parked cars. Rustin walks Karolina to her car and she apologizes. Rustin points out that his mother definitely knows about him. He asks her to get him out of here. They jump in Karolina's car and leave.
Back in the present, At the law office of Bobbi Jonas, Rustin is escorted in. She says he should call him mother. He doesn't. They start to argue but he backs down. He's not here to fight, he's here to ask for help. She says she's helped him as much as she can. He asks if she's seen the news. She makes it clear she doesn't like supers.
Rustin misunderstands and thinks she's homophobic. She's not and is offended he thinks so. Her best friend Sharice is a lesbian. Rustin knows, but didn't think Bobbi did. She says she's not an idiot or a homophobe. She won't help Kyle, though, because he's a super. She doesn't hate them, she just thinks supers are always going to lose in court and she doesn't want to waste time. She says he's naive and he says talking to her was a waste of time.
Flashback to 1997: Kyle plays catch with his father, Cullen. Cullen played defensive tackle and retains the size. Kyle's mother, Avril, rocks in a chair on their front porch. Cullen tells Kyle a story about his grandfather, Pops. Pops didn't play football, he was a stick ball player. Cullen takes a break to coach Kyle. It's tough, but not abusive. Cullen says that Pops could really hit well. Kyle is bored by anything that isn't football.
Pops went pro and played for the Indianapolis Clowns in the Negro Leagues, even though they were dying off. He went on to play in the majors and Pops played second base. He was bad a defense, but the team needed his bat. A white player who went on to be a big star didn't like Pops. This player had sharp spikes on his cleats and would try to hurt Pops any time he slid into second. Pops used to get cut up pretty bad. And he'd always fight back. And he'd always get tossed from the game. And his team would lose every time.
Eventually Pops figured it out after talking to some other players. The next time, Pops takes their advice and doesn't fight back. He shows he's bleeding hand to the ump and the other guy gets tossed from the game. His team not only won the game, but went on to win the championship that year. Kyle says Pops was a badass and goes inside to eat. Once he's gone, Avril asks why Cullen tells him that story, which is a lie. Cullen says because he needs to.
Back in the present, Rustin is drinking and Irene picks at a salad. Rustin wonders why Kyle won't come home. Irene says he told him why, but Rustin refuses to see the truth. They're both frustrated and get into a fight. Irene tells Rustin that he always saw Kyle as a trophy. He landed a star player. He wanted to show him off and once that wasn't possible, Rustin didn't know why he liked Kyle. Or himself. Rustin storms out.
Rustin walks outside, seething in anger. He orders a car while looking at the card for Curiose. Once arriving, he goes inside the shop. Inside, Rustin is the only customer. The clerk asks if he's a cop and tells him he has to get out, cops are bad for business. Rustin shows him the card and the clerk says he hasn't seen one of those in years. Rustin says he's here for powers, but the clerk says all that stuff is illegal. The clerk tells him that anything that will give him powers will be difficult to control and it will enhance emotions, particularly anger. Rustin says anger is a gift. The clerk clarifies that the anger has to be righteous. Rustin says it is. The clerk says these things are permanent. Rustin says he knows what question he's asking, what's the answer? The clerk takes him in the back room.
Rustin walks out of the shop holding a small bag. He pulls out a small bracelet and puts it on his wrist. Nothing happens. Jean comes running towards him. Rustin feels queasy and unsteady. He asks if Jean followed him, but Jean says no. He stumbles a bit and Jean puts an arm around his shoulder. Jean says he lives around the corner and he can rest there. Rustin says no, but he feels too sick to do anything around it. He's reluctant, but they go inside and Jean locks the door behind them. Jean helps Rustin lie down on the couch.
Rustin tells Jean to turn off the TV. Raven's on and he's tired of her face. Jean mutes it. He calls Raven names in solidarity. He offers to get Rustin a drink. He asks for water. Rustin turns off the TV. Jean returns with the water. Jean leans in and tries to kiss him, but Rustin recoils. He falls over trying to get away from Jean and Jean takes that as an invitation. Jean presses further and Rustin pushes him to the floor. Jean gets upset at the rejection. Rustin once again makes it clear he doesn't want to be with Jean. Rustin leaves, telling Jean he only wants Kyle. Jean says screw Kyle, Jean is the only one who cares about Rustin. Rustin says that's not true and leaves. Jean freaks out, calling for Rustin to come back. He turns the TV on again and sees Raven. Jean gets a shoe box and takes out a small gun.
Flashback to 2033: Rustin and Kyle are on a date at a nice local restaurant. Rustin wants his steak very well done. Kyle asks why they're at fancy dinner tonight. Rustin tells Kyle to shut up and listen. Rustin describes his own flaws. He talks about the loss of football, the only think that gave him purpose. He talks about meeting Kyle and getting that purpose back. He became an activist because of Kyle. He describes all the good things about Kyle. He talks about how others betrayed him. He talks about how he lost the ability to sleep to music. And how meeting Kyle all the bad thoughts go away and made him finally happy. Rustin proposes and Kyle accepts with a kiss.
Back in the present, at the Chesapeake Supermax detention center, Kyle is shackled to a table as Rustin walks in. Kyle isn't happy to see him. Rustin asks how he's holding up. Kyle doesn't really answer. Rustin reveals that he has powers now. He almost sets off the super alarm. Kyle says that if he uses even 1% of his powers, defense mechanisms will kick in and they'd both be dead in seconds. Rustin says that's nonsense, either one of them is powerful enough to break out of the detention center.
Rustin says he did it. He killed Paul. Rustin says he knows and he doesn't care because Paul deserved it. Kyle says no one deserved that. Rustin says Paul was twisted and evil and he deserved it. Kyle calls himself a murderer. Rustin says bullshit, he's going to break Kyle out. Kyle says the sensors will kill them. Rustin believes in them and says they can't be hurt.
Kyle rejects his plan. He says he'll let the defense mechanisms kill him before he escapes. He will accept justice. Rustin says there is no justice in this situation. Rustin asks him why he's doing it, now sobbing. Kyle tells him to go, a tear running down his cheek.
Bobbi sits in her office scrolling the Internet. She comes across a graduation speech Kyle gave. It really gets to her. She finishes her drink, turns off the TV and leaves.
At home, Rustin opens the door and lets Bobbi in. Rustin tells her he doesn't know what to do and she says that's why she's here. Bobbi says she's here to take the case. Rustin is surprised, but he says it doesn't matter. Kyle dumped him. She asks if he still loves Kyle. He says yes, absolutely. She says they should get to work. She pulls out a computer and notes that Kyle's guilty plea means they have to come up with a strategy. They'll have to go after the laws that enable things, like the Benjamin Act. Rustin is overwhelmed, but he thanks his mom.
Flashback to: Hundreds are gathered for Rustin and Kyle's wedding. Avril walks Rustin down the aisle. The couple is very happy. Kyle and Rustin exchange vows. They kiss and the crowd erupts in cheers and congratulations.
In the present, in the Supermax Courtroom, Kyle is on trial. Judge Leong presides. She reads the charges against Kyle. Kyle pleads guilty and says he'll accept the justice of the court. Raven is sworn in to testify. Jean pulls out a gun made from a 3D printer and tries to kill Raven. Kyle steps in the way and the bullet hits him. It's a flesh wound, but he still bleeds. Rustin beats the crap out of Jean while the supercops converge on the would-be assassin. Judge Leong puts the court into recess.
That night, Rustin can't sleep. Irene can't sleep. Raven can't sleep. Kyle rests in a deep sleep.
Monday morning, Judge Leong brings court back into session. The room has mostly been cleared. Bobbi stands up and starts to make her case for leniency for Kyle. Judge Leong interrupts her and says that while she is sympathetic with Kyle, the law is very strict and she has no ability to change Kyle's sentence. It's illegal. She declares Kyle guilty. Because of the nature of the case, there are no appeals. Kyle is sentenced to death and it'll be broadcast on TV.
Kyle is escorted into the execution chamber and gets strapped in. The execution is televised. Everyone is watching. The announcer says this is required under the Benjamin Act. The judge says that Kyle plead guilty to killing Paul Benjamin with his super powers and that the penalty is execution. A doctor explains the process and asks if Kyle has anything left to say. He says "Step. Throw. Follow through." Rustin cries. The executioner flips the switch and the execution begins. Irene, Maria and Bobbi stand tall as Kyle dies. Raven cries. She pushes Julio away. The judge pronounces Kyle dead. Bells ring across the country.
At Rustin's house, tons of people have gathered to watch the trial coverage. Rustin approaches Irene and reveals to her that he is now a super. He asks her to join him. She says show him how. He gives her the Curiose card and they fly away.
Rustin and Irene arrive at Curiose and note that there is a long and growing line waiting outside. We see other similar shops throughout the world. They all have lines. Elsewhere throughout the world, more and more people are shown using powers or taking up weapons. Some are even using their powers in public. Supercops fight back
Raven walks into her apartment carrying a bag from Curiose. She pulls out a headdress. She puts it on and begins to glow bright yellow, filling up the screen.
