A TV commercial stars Dawn Dortch. She invites viewers to attend the 4th Annual Beware the Dortches Haunted House. She tells everyone to bring their friends for their scariest haunted house yet.
A group of high school kids, mostly juniors, hang out the house of Ahmed Bin Tengku, who is an athlete. With him are Jeffrey Martin, Sarah Willingham, Himari Ito, Rosa Martin and Gordon Stevens. They are bored and looking for something to do. They decide to go to the Dortches haunted house. They're all into it except Sarah.
Gordon drives down a lonely forest road. They realize that the blue-skinned woman from the commercial was related to their classmate Brandy Dortch, who has the nickname of "Brandy Blue." Sarah REALLY doesn't want to go to the haunted house. The others try to talk her into it (except Himari), but she's reluctant because of her past.
Flashback to 13 years earlier: A younger Sarah stands outside an attraction called Dr. Satan's Spaulding's House of Horrors. Her mother holds her hand as they stand in line. An attendant collects waivers from those in line. Sarah says she doesn't want to go inside. Natalie makes her go in and they are the last people for the night and the line is closed.
Natalie and Sarah walk through the haunted house when the Hillbilly Horror Twins jump out and chase them. They escape and in another room, they are chased by an Evil Clown. The flashback ends when the Clown grabs ahold of Sarah.
Back in the present, Sarah cries as she finishes up the story about the clown sexually assaulting her. Her friends are supportive, but she says she's tired of being afraid. She agrees to go to the haunted house. They drive to the Dortches' haunted house, which sits in a heavily forested area.
They arrive and the haunted house is set in a building next to the real Dortches' household, which is scarier than the tourist attraction. Outside the haunted house Misty Dortch hands out clipboards so that those going inside can sign wavers. Gordon makes fun of Misty as "Goth Smurfette." Misty asks them what's so funny, suspicious they are making fun of her, but they play it off.
Ahmed pays for the group to go in. Misty counts the money and tells him she doesn't have change. Ahmed tells her to keep it as a tip. Misty tells them they all have to sign the waivers and hands them clipboards. The gang asks why they have to sign waivers and Misty can't really answer without reading from a slip of paper. She can't read well, though and has to ask them for help. Gordon continues to make fun of Misty. The slip of paper says the waivers are there to indemnify the Dortches from lawsuits from haunted house customers. Jeffrey thinks it's a trick to hype up the level of scares in the house. Sarah chickens out and heads back towards the car. Himari comforts her and Rosa tells her it's only a gimmick. They go inside while Gordon continues to make fun of Misty.
Once inside, Misty locks the door and tells them to follow her. Jeffrey makes fun of her and Gordon makes fun of the haunted house. They see the "scary" path through the haunted house and Gordon wants to take it, but Misty says that way is closed for this year and won't be open again until next year. Rosa thinks it's unlikely she'll be back next year as the next room is like a cheap Halloween party for little kids. They make fun of the room, but Misty tells them it is a room for kids. Rosa and the others thinks it's a waste of time.
Misty tells them the next room is called the Pirates of Perversity. The room is a disappointment, though, and the only interesting part is a series of pirate statues across the back of the room. Jeffrey inspects them, but says they aren't perverse at all. The last statue comes to life and scares Jeffrey enough he falls to the ground. The statue was really Cage Dortch and he lumbers away. Jeffrey admits that was a good scare. Most of the others agree, but Sarah is upset and Himari is concerned about Sarah.
The next room is the Weird and Wild West. Sitting at a stool at the bar is a man, Buck Dortch. Ahmed jokes about the room. Rosa puts her hand on Buck's shoulder and he falls to the floor with a thud. Gordon flips him over and Buck roars to life, scaring Gordon and Sarah. Buck threatens Gordon with a machete and scares him before walking away. Gordon is scared. Sarah tries to brush it off. Jeffrey thinks it's lame.
The next room is themed as a curiosity shoppe with various strange items in glass cases: human fetuses, a two-headed goat, a "misfortune teller." Sarah asks about the last item and Misty tells her to try it out. Sarah expresses a preconceived notion of the Dortches as mean or unhelpful people, generally speaking. Sarah puts a dollar into the misfortune teller machine and a card slides out. The front of the car simply says her name and nothing else. She flips it over and the other side of the card says "you're going to die." Her friends freak out and Himari says it's not funny.
Ahmed puts a dollar in the machine and he, too, gets a card that says he's going to die. They ask Misty if these are meant to be jokes and she doesn't respond. Rosa demands they get out of this room. Misty leads them out and that's the end of the tour.
They start to complain and Misty tells them that next year's haunted house will be their scariest one ever. Everyone grumbles, but Misty tells they they arrived too late. She gives them tickets to get in for only $10 each next year. Ahmed keeps the tickets.
Later, in Gordon's car, Jeffrey and the gang say they hated the haunted house. Except Ahmed, who loved it. The others think it was cheap. Gordon says that's typical of the Dortches. Rosa asks who wants to help her plan homecoming and everyone groans.
At Starlin High School, the kids head to class. Rosa, Gordon, Sarah and the others are in Mr. Tessel's home room class. Principal Valentina Casiano does the morning announcements. The kids make jokes and Rosa quiets them because she doesn't want to miss anything.
A girl named Regina asks Ahmed if she can borrow a pencil. Rosa gives him one and he hands it to her. Rosa makes fun of him for flirting.
In the Starlin High School Gym, Ahmed, Rosa and Gordon watch Sarah play center for the high school's basketball team. The game tips off and the movie switches into full-on animation. Sarah grows giant and the Tigers of the other team become literal. The Tigers attack her while Sarah smashes the basketball home, shattering not only the hoop, but the entire building. The Tigers grab the ball and throw it back and forth, but Sarah steals the ball. She shrinks back down and the animation flips back to live action as she slams the ball and her team wins, 68-32. The crowd cheers for Sarah.
Ahmed stands at his locker when Regina taps him on the shoulder. She asks what he's doing tomorrow and he says that he and the gang are going to the movies. She asks if she can tag along. He says sure. She clarifies that it's a date. He's surprised. She's nervous. He says yes. She hugs him.
Ahmed and Regina's date is a group affair. Also with them are Jeffrey, Clay, Rosa, Sarah, Gordon and Himari. Rosa hates horror movies, but Gordon says he loves them all. Himari checks to see if he's seen an obscure movie, but Gordon doesn't know it. They head into the theater.
Regina and Ahmed sit together and share popcorn. Jeffrey and Clay sit together and Jeffrey carefully rubs the side of Clay's hand. Sarah isn't super excited by the movie.
The movie switches to animation. Sarah sinks down into her chair so far, she falls into a pit of blackness. Gordon pulls out a flaming sword and leaps into the pit, his sword providing the only line the further and further he falls away from the theater. The other teens wield flaming weapons and leap into the pit to find Sarah. Gordon walks through a darkness alive with demons and spirits. The demons solidify to attack him, but he defeats them with his sword. More demons attack, but the other teens have arrived and they easily destroy the demons. Gordon finds Sarah and they rescue and protect her while her friends defeat the demons. The animation ends and they walk out of the theater, celebrating the movie.
In a classroom, the students discuss what phobias are. Rosa is afraid of snakes. Jeff is afraid of being himself. Gordon is afraid of spiders. This will be on the exam.
Snow falls as as kids head into the stadium for a football game. At halftime, the game is tied 17-17. Jeffrey appears on the video screen and introduces a new video, "School Spirit," that has him perform a rap about the team.
In the third quarter, the Mavericks are now up 31-17. Ahmed is lined up at the 50-yard line. His friends sit in the stands, except Clay, who plays wide receiver. As the ball is snapped, the movie shifts to abstract animation. The offensive line turns into a brick wall. The opposing team, the Raiders, turn into pirates and begin to scale the wall. Ahmed grows tall enough to see over the wall. The Raiders multiply until there are MANY more of them than there are Mavericks. The earliest Raiders have gotten past the wall and are chasing him, but he spins out of the way. He spots Clay open near the goal line and shoots the ball to him like a cannon. Clay jumps 30 feet into the air and catches the ball. A wall of defenders tries to stop him, but he leaps over them, flips in the air and lands for a touchdown. The final score is 54-20 for the Mavericks.
After the game, Jeffrey goes to his car, which is parked out of sight. Waiting at his car is his teammate Clay. They make out. Jeffrey offers to drive Clay to the party, but Clay is closeted and can't.
Sarah plays Juliet in the Shakespeare play, opposite Daniel. Rosa plays a smaller part. After the show, the audience gives a standing ovation. Sarah stands between Rosa and Daniel. They bow as a group with the rest of the cast. Afterwards, Daniel goes down on Sarah backstage.
The kids are in line for the go carts. Sarah and Jeffrey fight over who is the better driver. Ahmed isn't going to ride because coach would get mad at him. Mark and Mitchell Williams join the line for the go carts. Brandy Dortch asks Ahmed if he wants to go out with her. The Williams brothers laugh at her. Ahmed tries to play it off, but he can't help but laugh at the Williams brothers' jokes. She catches him and gets angry. Ahmed says he's going out with someone and Brandy knows he's lying. He says it's Regina and Brandy is hurt. She walks away while the Williams brothers laugh at her.
Rosa presides over an SGA meeting. Sherry reads the minutes. Gordon provides the treasurer's report. Jeffrey gives the report for the Gay-Straight Alliance club.
Rosa, Jeffrey, Gordon and Sarah exit the SGA meeting. They join their parents, who wait for them. Norman tells Natalie he'll send the check on Friday. Natalie tells Sarah it's time to leave. She asks Rosa and Jeffrey if she'll see them in church on Sunday. Rosa says she definitely will. Jeffrey says he has practice.
The high school auditorium is set up for the Quiz Bowl. The Starlin high team consists of Rosa, Gordon, Himari and Ainsley. Ahmed and Sarah watch from the audience. The contest is in progress and they are playing against a team from Michelle Obama High School. Principal Casiano asks Himari a question, she easily gets it right. Gordon is next and he aces his question. Ainsley gets it correctly and the Starlin team wins. Himari and Rosa hug. Himari is into Rosa, but Rosa doesn't notice.
On the Starlin High School track, Rosa, Ahmed and Sarah are there to support Himari gets ready to race. As the runners get ready to race, the movie transforms into abstract animation. Her opponents turn into the animals that their team represents. Himari transforms into a bird-human. She stares at her form in a mirror and shrinks down to an even skinnier form. The referee fires the starter pistol and the racers take off. Himari falls behind. She exhales and starts to return to her original size. As she does, she gains on the others. The Eagle, who is in the lead, sees her coming and tries to push her off the track, but Himari maneuvers around the Eagle and wins the race. Afterwards, Himari is surrounded by her teammates who congratulate her for her victory.
The teens sit around the cafeteria table with their report cards. Rosa has never gotten a grade other than an "A" and she's headed to Harvard. Himari is also applying to Harvard. Sarah just gets grades good enough to be eligible for sports and her top choice is UConn. Ahmed says his father won't be happy, but coach won't mind.
He wants to play for an East Coast team. Gordon's going to play at USC. He loves soccer.
Brandy Dortch walks into the cafeteria and Sarah makes fun of Ahmed, saying it's his girlfriend. He hides, but Brandy notices. She stares at them and says they're fuckers. Sarah insults her, but Rosa and Himari chide her. Much of the cafeteria crowd laughs at Brandy as she leaves. Principal Casiano catches them and tells them to go to her office.
Principal Casiano sits at her desk across from Ahmed and Rosa. She's disappointed in both of them. She says she knows the Dortches are strange, but she expects more from Ahmed and Rosa. Casiano says her friends call her Brandy Blue, but that the name is disgusting. She requires them to apologize to Brandy as student body president and captain of the football team. If not, they're banned from going to the Homecoming dance. Ahmed is upset and Rosa is shocked. Casiano isn't joking, though.
Brandy puts books into her locker. Rosa and Ahmed apologize, but Brandy rejects it. Ahmed gets angry, but Rosa cuts him off. Brandy slams her hands on the lockers and tells them to leave her alone. The principal tells Rosa she tried and then watches after Brandy with concern.
That night at the homecoming dance, Ahmed and Regina dance. Gordon and Ainsley dance, but not too seriously. Clay and Jeffrey stand at opposite ends of the room from each other. The other students dance with their dates. The principal announces the Homecoming Court and Ahmed is king and Amy O'Buck is the queen.
Ahmed tells everyone the after party is at his house. His parents are gone, but everyone shows up and the party is the biggest student blowout of the year. The kids are watching football on TV when an ad comes on for the 5th Annual Beware the Dortches Haunted House, which they announce as their scariest house ever. Ahmed rushes out of the room while the others discuss the haunted house. Ahmed has the free tickets that Misty gave them last year. Even Sarah says she'll go, since last year wasn't that scary.
The Dortches sit around the family dinner table, with Lovie Dortch at the head of the table. Leanne, the white-haired daughter, sits at a smaller, separate table, alone. Lovie tells everyone to eat so they have strength for the haunted house. Lovie says their time has finally come. The walls are covered with a series of axes of all shapes and sizes, including a huge battle axe that sits against the family crest.
Lovie has wanted revenge since they came for Winston. They reject the claims of child molestation against him. Lovie says society lies about them and they will forget no sin, no matter how small. They toast Winston and say that no one will ever forget the Dortches. She pulls down the heavy battle axe and tells the others to choose their weapons.
Three cops sit in the bullpen of the local police station. Malloy hangs up the phone and says it's another call from the haunted house about a missing person. They weren't willing to file a report, but the caller wanted the cops to do something. Malloy's family had a farm near the Dortches' farm for a while, but he doesn't know much about them. They dig into the files.
Malloy describes the rest of the Dortch family: Lovie, Dawn, Misty, Peggy and Tammy. The last two are known as the "Terror Twins" after they went on a spree of killing people's pets. They got off with no real punishment, but they quit after that. Other members of the family include Brandy, who goes to school with the teens, and LeAnn. LeAnn is the black sheep of the family. She's not a true believer and rarely gets into trouble. There are no men at the Dortches' home. The patriarch, Winston Dortch, has been dead for a decade. He had been accused of molesting a bunch of girls before he died. One of his victims was Sarah.
At the Dortches' home, there ARE two men: Cage and Buck. They are shown eating something at the table next to LeAnn. The police captain says they should check out the Dortches' home, even though it's probably a waste of time.
At the Dortches Haunted House, Misty escorts teens inside. Sarah stares at her, but Misty only replies with vague threats. Misty sees Clay and Jeffrey secretly holding hands and is upset by it.
Inside, the hallway is very dark. Ahmed tries to open the door, but it's locked. Sarah starts to freak out. Gordon says this is the part where they get separated and everybody goes through their own frights. He's watched video of haunted houses on YouTube. Not this one, it has no web presence, but similar ones.
Something roars from deeper in the house. Rosa says they have to get moving. Several people pull out phones and turn on the flashlights. Ahmed tries the door again and gets shocked when he touches it. The floor shocks Regina, it's trying to get them moving forward. Rosa leads and they follow.
They come to an intersection, but they can't really see what's down any of the passageways. Buck and Cage appear in dirty, bloody clown masks and roar. They knock Gordon to the ground, but the others escape down various hallways. Cage smashes Gordon in the head, knocking him out. Buck picks him up and carries him down the passage.
Ainsley walks through the haunted house and comes upon a door marked "The Gate of Hell." Barking dogs are coming for her. She opens the door and goes inside as the dogs get closer. He thrashes around and cracks his phone. Now a big hairy spider appears in the coffin. Then many more. The movie switches to animation and the darkness of the coffin shatters into shard of blackness. The spiders become infinite and some of them are fantastic in form. They crawl towards his head.
Gordon grows larger and hulks out. He smashes the coffin into a million shards. He rips off his own skin and a new, normal version of Gordon climbs out of the coffin and his old skin. Ahmed gets to his feet ans stomps this dog, too.
Laying on the ground is Sherry's body, ripped to shreds by the dogs. The dead dogs lay on either side of her, their skulls caved in. Ahmed, whose boots are covered in blood walks away quietly. He goes the opposite direction of Rosa and Himari.
Gordon wakes up with a scream. He's in the coffin, but there are no spiders or roaches. The coffin is open and he peers outside. The coast is clear and he tries to get out. He knocks the coffin to the ground and climbs out. He leaves. LeAnn steps out of the shadows and runs her hand over the coffin.
Jeffrey wakes up and he's strapped to a hospital operating room table in a very dirty operating room. Clay is strapped to the next table. The Williams twins are there and they've been carved into little bits. Lovie stands over clay with a scalpel and needle and pokes and prods Clay while he screams. She's experimenting on him and not happy with the results.

Lovie says the house is for Dortches and the girls don't belong. Himari says they'll leave if she points them towards the exit. Lovie caresses the battle axe that sits in front of the family crest. Lovie says it's too late for them to leave, there are rules. Lovie pulls down the axe, which is too heavy for her. It hits the game with a thunk. Himari screams.
