1.  Meet Scottie Nichols, a 10-year-old latch-key kid in 1985.

  2. Establish that his prized possessions are his comic books.

  3. His regular daily routine is interrupted when he finds an ad for the Columbia House Tape Club.

  4. He picks out cassettes and orders them.

  5. The tapes arrive and he loves them, particularly "Purple Rain."

  6. Columbia House got his name wrong and he tries to get his mom to get stamps so he can send them a correction.

  7. His mom never gets the stamps.

  8. He finds another Columbia House ad and he orders more cassettes, using his correct name.

  9. The new cassettes arrive in his real name, but cassettes continue to arrive in the old name, too.

  10. Eventually, the original cassettes, with the typo name, stop coming because of lack of payment.

  11. His mom finds him a used cassette rack and he scrupulously alphabetizes them. He's very much into music now and doesn't want to leave the house other than going to school.

  12. Scottie finds a Columbia House ad with different cassettes in it and orders more. He uses his mom's name, and actively commits fraud for the first time.

  13. The scam works and more cassettes arrive. Over time he almost completely fills the rack. It now holds 99 cassettes.

  14. A random cassette with an all-black cover arrives. It has no markings. He plays it and a voice speaks. Directly to him.

  15. The voice tells him that they know what he did and he didn't get away with it. The voice reveals personal information about him and gives him a warning. If he doesn't stop, they'll destroy all his stuff. And if that doesn't work, they'll get violent.

  16. Freaked out, Scottie destroys his Walkman and all the cassettes. Then he takes the broken bits outside and burns them.

  17. Scottie stays scared for months, but nothing happens, so eventually the fear fades.

  18. Six months later, Scottie comes home and learns that his mom's new boyfriend gave her a new stereo with a tape player.

  19. He hides from it and distracts himself.

  20. Eventually he gives in. Between the mattresses of his bed, he pulls out the one cassette he saved, Purple Rain. He plays.

  21. The doorbell rings and the movie cuts to black.
