Charlie Waters sleeps at 1 p.m. The room is a mess.
Charlie’s father, Mort, walks into the room. He scans the mess and his son’s lethargy and walks away in disgust.
Mort comes back into the room holding an air horn. The horn blares loudly enough that Charlie rolls away from it and crashes to the floor.
Mort says Charlie has reached their limit.
Charlie has to grow up. No more sleeping past 9 a.m. He has to keep his room clean or be fined $25 per day.
Charlie said he doesn't have any money.
Mort says Charlie has to get a job, and pay $200 a week in rent.
Charlie say his parents don't need the money. Mort says it's a matter of principle.
Charlie reads a strange ad for Installers, Inc. He tosses the ad in the trash. He thinks twice and pulls it from the trash.
He calls the number from the ad. Jenny answers. She hands the phone to her husband, Phil.
Phil asks Charlie if he can put stuff together. Charlie is puzzled, but it's not complicated. Phil is talking literally.
Charlie says sure. Phil says he'll be the judge of that. He tells Charlie to come down for an interview. Phil gives him the address.
Charlie pulls onto Grantwood street. He tries to follow a crumpled sheet of direction.
He passes the numbers, but doesn't see the house. He circles back and this time sees a hidden dirt road.
He pulls down the dirt road, with tree branches scraping his car.
Charlie comes upon a clearing with a large two-story house. It's run down and overgrown.
He gets freaked out an prepares to leave. He sees the Installers Inc. sign and changes his mind.
Charlie walks to the front door and Jenny opens it to greet him.
She invites him in for lemonade. He goes.
Inside the house is dirty an unkempt. Charlie sits on the couch. Phil sits in a recliner, Jenny a rocker.
Phil asks if Charlie can put stuff together. He says yes.
Phil asks what he's put together before. Jenny tells Phil to let him get adjusted to things.
She asks where he's from. He says here. She asks what school he went to. He says Washington High. He graduated last year.
She asks if he has a lot of family here. He's an only child. He says he lives with his dad and stepmom.
They ask again what he's put together before. He says an entertainment center and some bookshelves.
He also used to help my girlfriend's mom sometimes, helping her put desks and shelves and stuff together.
Jenny asks if he's girlfriend. He doesn't, they broke up 6 months ago.
Phil asks if Charlie thinks he can work for them. He says he thinks so.
Phil goads Charlie into proving his skills. He goes into the workroom. Phil tells Jenny to get the potboiling.
Phil gives Charlie the directions to put together a computer desk.
As Charlie reads the directions, Phil grabs a sledgehammer.
Phil hits Carlie in the head then tells Jenny that supper's on.
Mitchell Gorman reads the Installer's Inc. ad. He thinks it's odd, but he calls.
Jenny answers.
