The Early farmhouse is quiet. Outside, many of the Bonsai trees have been moved into the barn and the farm is half empty. One of the blue snakes with many legs skitters by, on the Early side of the fence. It goes into the barn.
Dwayne, Judith, Karl and Kyra sit around the TV. Meredith lays in the recliner, nearly flat. Dwayne eats from a big bowl of popcorn, then passes it to Judith. Karl asks if he can watch the game, but it's family movie night and Dwayne is about to show them Meteor Man.
A news anchor talks about the hurricane and Dwayne shushes everybody. Hurricane Carl has strengthened to a Category 5 storm. They also report on the riot at the state prison, where at least 7 men are dead and 13 others hospitalized, including Warden Bryant. Irving Buss is being charged with attempted murder for the assault on Bryant. The Earlys bought their property from Buss. Dwayne steps outside to make a phone call.
Dwayne paces back and forth in front of the door. He glances towards the front window and sees Judith looking out at him. He turns and walks toward the barn. Something crashes into the fence. Dwayne is shocked and drops his phone. He looks up to see Russell. A basketball bounces away from the fence. He hangs up the phone. He stares at Russell. Dwayne heads back towards the house.
Judith makes microwave popcorn. Dwayne walks in and she asks him who was on the phone. He says it was Paul Rodriguez, whose son is on the team with Karl. They go to watch the movie.
A monster wanders through the Hasley junkyard.
Billy, George, Russell and Keith sit around the Hasley dinner table. They are watching Duck Dynasty. The phone rings. George plays games and eventually Billy answers the phone. Russell comforts Keith about the dog and promises to get Dwayne. Billy hangs up and tells them a city inspector is coming by tomorrow. George tells Billy to call their mother. He does.
Billy takes a flashlight outside to check the fence. Billy walks along the fence, shining the light to look for breaches. He comes to the broken fence leading to the Early property. The monster roars from within the junkyard. Billy spins around and the BSCS coin flies from his pocket and lands in the grass. He doesn’t notice.
The city inspector arrives at the Hasley house. They got a complaint and Billy has to give them a tour of the property. Billy gets angry at Dwayne then gives the tour.
In Charley’s room at Tukabatchee Hospital, he and Barbra have finished packing. Charley is dressed and they sit, waiting. Two orderlies arrive: one with a wheelchair and one with a cart for luggage.
Roth directs the men, who are moving the last of the Bonsai trees into the barn. Meyers and Ronnie Storm team up to carry a larger tree inside. Judith walks up to Roth and asks if they're done. Roth says they almost are.
Ronnie goes inside to use the restroom. He takes notes inside, mapping the layout and doing an inventory of their pantry. Meredith catches him and asks what he's doing. He says he's looking for the bathroom and she directs him. He goes into the bathroom. She stares after him, suspicious.
Barbra pulls a Ford pick-up down the driveway and parks close to the front door.
Barbra comes home. The four brothers come to see her. Keith runs up and gives her an excited hug. She has to gather Charley's clothes for the trip to Texas. She has Russell pack them. Billy tells her the inspector gave him a list of things to fix. She gives him money to bribe the inspector. She also gives him money for bills and groceries.
Kyra finds a letter sitting on her desk. It's from SCAD and says she can return to school once she pays $563 in fees. She declares she needs to get a job.
Dwayne walks out of the barn and locks the door behind him. He looks up and sees that the pallet has fallen and the hole in the fence is gaping open. He walks over and lifts the pallet back into place. He kneels down and examines strange-looking feces. It’s greenish in color.
Dwayne unlocks the barn and goes inside. A second later, he comes back out with a shovel. He scoops up the feces and tosses it over the fence into the junkyard. He hears the roar from the junkyard. Dwayne cocks an eyebrow. A gleaming object on the ground on the Hasley side catches his eye. He bends down, reaches through the fence and picks it up. He holds it up and eyes it. It’s the BSCS coin.
Kyra walks down Main Street, passing various shops and restaurants. She carries a stack of resumes. She stops in front of Rincon’s and looks inside. She shrugs then goes inside. She comes back out, flustered, and quickly continues down Main Street. She walks past several more shops and stops in front of Sid’s Delicious. She smiles, then goes inside.
Audrey comes walking down the sidewalk. She’s carrying a stack of flyers. She stops before the community board outside Sid’s Delicious. She takes one of the flyers and staples it to the board. It’s for the Businesswoman’s Roundtable. She moves on.
Kyra walks inside Sid’s Delicious Cafe and loves it. She meets Allie and immediately falls in love. Allie likes her, too, and they flirt. Kyra is here for a job. Allie goes to get Sid.
Maggie Brown walks down Main Street and stops outside Sid’s to look at the community bulletin board. She scans the various flyers and posters. She stops on Audrey’s Business Roundtable flyer. She yanks the flyer off the bulletin board, folds it and stuffs it in her purse.
The City Hall council chambers are packed. A sign on the back wall reads “Candidates Forum.” Ricky and several other council candidates on stage listen to the moderator, who thanks them for coming. Ricky walks to the back of the room and shakes hands with George. They walk out the door.
George and Ricky exit City Hall and walk down Main Street. George tells Ricky he did well against his opponent, Dax Morrison. They turn down a side street that leads to the city’s lone park. The men cut through the dark park. As they go, George reaches out and briefly grabs Ricky’s hand. Ricky smiles at George and squeezes his hand. Then he pulls it away, saying "not here." George says they should go to his campaign office, no one will see them there. They flirt and run for the office. Kyra sees them.
Students, family and supporters flock to the Tukabatchee High School gym. The stands are packed. Karl, Theo, Mack, Aaron and Jordy huddle near their bench with Coach Gallant. The REFEREE blows a whistle and the players move out onto the court. Karl plays well, getting other players involved. Mack is the new captain. Russell doesn't play. Tukabatchee wins 83-54.
Meredith makes her way through the lunch line, sliding her tray along, despite her crutches. She reaches the end of the line and pays the cashier, but she has no way to carry it. Keith sees her and rushes to grab the tray. She resists at first, not letting go of the tray. He says she needs his help. She glares at him for a moment, then relents. Keith sets her tray at his table, across from where his plate waits. Meredith looks around for her friends, hoping they can rescue her. She doesn’t see them. Keith says Dwayne didn't have to kill his dog. Keith tries to hold back his tears, but he can’t. Meredith doesn’t say anything. She puts her hand on Keith’s shoulder. He wipes his eyes and stops crying.
Keith asks her to go on a date with him. She hesitates to answer when her friends arrive. Darci, Tameka and Valentina arrive, just in time. Darci picks up Meredith’s food tray. Valentina helps Meredith too her feet. Meredith looks at Keith and shrugs. Tameka waves goodbye to Keith and he walks away. Meredith asks if they're still coming over tonight. They say yes.
Karl is showered and dressed in fresh clothes, his nose bandaged. He waits out front with Meredith. Hiding around the corner of the building, peeking at them are Russell and Keith. Russell pulls a carton of eggs out of his backpack. The brothers grin. Russel opens the carton, three of the eggs have cracked. Russell pulls the broken shells and goo and hurls them to the ground. He wipes his hand on the wall. Keith nods his head. He grabs three eggs. Russell grabs four then tosses the carton to the ground. The other eggs break. He transfers all the eggs but one to his left hand. He Cocks his right hand back, ready to throw. Keith copies him, but he’s left-handed. Russell throws his first egg and nails Karl. He ducks as Russell throws again. Keith throws his first egg and hits Karl. Russell hits Karl again. Keith and Meredith make eye contact. He throws the egg. She ducks behind Karl and the egg hits him instead. Meredith loses balance and falls hard to the grass. Russell throws his last egg, hitting Meredith’s leg. Karl chases Russell, who runs around the side of the building. Keith drops his last egg and goes to help Meredith up. Before he gets to her, a school crossing guard rushes to intervene. He points to Keith, who freezes. Some other kids help Meredith up. The crossing guard grabs Keith by the shirt collar and drags him inside the school. Meredith watches with a frown on her face.
Sid’s Delicious cafe is busy, with customers coming and going and a line inside. Kyra stands behind the counter, in a uniform, stocking muffins.
Allie walks in from the back room, carrying a sleeve of Styrofoam coffee cups. They flirt while working. When she was young, Kyra and her family went to Puerto Rico and there was this artist who made a bunch of these type of sculptures. Now she makes her own sculptures. Allie asks if she can come see them. Kyra is hesitant, but she says yes.
Kyra's next customers are Dwayne and Paul. She's embarrassed.
Dwayne and Paul share a table, drinking coffee. Dwayne eats a muffin. Dwayne pulls out the BSCS coin and sets it on the table. Paul coughs. Paul picks up the coin an examines it. He says he's heard rumors, the Black Sheep Civic Society is a boogeyman to scare Black and Brown kids. They're somewhere between the Jaycees and the KKK. Dwayne says the sheriff said something about the riot before it happened. Paul says there might be something about the BSCS at the public library.
Dwayne and Paul exit the cafe and shake hands. Paul walks away. Dwayne turns to cross the street and comes face-to-face with Russell. Russell insults him. Dwayne shakes his head and crosses the street.
Billy sits in a chair outside. He picks up rocks from the ground and tosses them at nearby cars. He hears something moving in the junkyard and stops. He pulls a gun out from his pocket and sets it on his lap. He hears movement in a different place. He points the gun towards the sound. His hand shakes with nerves.
Billy whirls around to see Ramone walking down the driveway. Ramone has his hands up. He nods towards the gun, which Billy aims at him. Billy looks down at the gun and is surprised. He stashes it in his pocket. Billy asks him for the money. Ramone hands him a stack of twenties. Billy counts it. The monster roars from the junkyard. Both men look up. The monster comes bounding from one of the pathways in the junkyard. Billy runs towards the house. The monster bounds high into the air and comes down on top of Ramone, who starts screaming. The monster bites Ramone’s face off.
Billy paces back-and-forth in his parents’ room. He’s angry and tears run down his face. George knocks at the door but Billy tells him to go away. He looks for the BSCS coin, but can't find it. He Googles “BSCS” and finds a book holding at the local library, “History and Philosophy of the Black Sheep Civic Society,” by Wyndham Waterford.
Billy spanks Keith with a belt for getting trouble at school.
Dwayne goes through the mail and finds the foreclosure notice. Judith says she's headed to the library. Dwayne goes with her.
Inside the library, Judith and Dwayne split up. Judith heads straight for the card catalog. Dwayne heads straight for the stacks. Unseen by either, Billy sits at a table in the back of the main room. He’s reading “History and Philosophy of the Black Sheep Civic Society.” He sees the Early’s and starts to panic. He looks down at the book one last time and sees a picture of the Black Sheep Civic Society Lodge Building. He closes the book and rushes towards the front desk, making sure Dwayne and Judith don’t see him. He tries to check the book out, but can't. Billy hesitates, then hands her the book. He leaves.
Dwayne doesn’t find the book he's looking for on the shelf. He asks the librarian, who is still holding the book. She tells him the book can't be checked out. She makes a joke about the book being popular all of a sudden. Dwayne is puzzled, and she says another guy tried to check the book out seconds ago. Billy is long gone. The librarian shrugs. Dwayne takes the book and sits at the nearest table. He immediately digs into the book. Judith sits at a nearby table, reading from a biography of Wyndham Waterford. Several other local history books sit on the table.
Dwayne and Judith arrive home. She carries several of the books from the table, including the bio of Wyndham Waterford. She heads for their shared office, he heads towards the bedroom. He gets in the shower. Judith walks into the room holding a handgun as if she’s allergic to it. She goes into the bathroom. She doesn't want the gun in the house. She discovers the BSCS coin in his pants. She examines the coin, then returns it to Dwayne's pants.
The Society members sit around the table at the BSCS lodge, except for Bryant, who is absent. Boone asks if they should be meeting without Bryant. Koy says the meeting was Bryant's ideas and he gave Koy instructions. Bryant is improving and will be out of the hospital soon. Koy pays everyone their dividends. Koy says the money is from their corporate masters and the Tugenbund Corporation. Koy asks for four volunteers to put the regulators back on the oil rig. The inmates can't do it because of the riot, so Koy selects the men present except Boone who isn't in as good of shape as the others.
Meredith lies in her bed, her leg elevated. Her ankle has started swelling. It’s bandaged, but blood and a greenish pus has seeped through the bandage. Karl sits in a chair next to the bed. They play cards. Judith knocks on the open door, telling her that he friends are here. Darci, Tameka and Valentina walk in.
The girls all hug and kiss Meredith. Karl watches in amusement. Tameka says hi to Karl. Meredith pretends to vomit and kicks Karl out.
Dwayne watches TV. Judith comes in and asks him what he was doing at the library. He says researching foreclosures and asks why she didn't tell him about the notice. She changes the subject, saying Meredith's not getting better. He says he's not feeling that good either.
School is out at Tukabatchee High School and students flow out of the building. Some get in cars waiting in the parent pick-up lane, others head to student parking, others walk home. Karl and his friends head toward the gym.
Basketball practice is in full swing at the Tukabatchee High gym. The stands are pretty full. Several scouts watch, as do a lot of girls, including Meredith and her friends. Among the scouts is Bevin, who watches intently, taking notes. Sitting with him is a reporter, Franklin. PG Karl is with the starters, PF Theo, SG Aaron, C Mack, and SF Barnes. SF Russell works with the reserves, PG Dennis, SG Barkley, C Roth, and PF Gallant.
Coach Gallant paces the sidelines, not happy. Karl throws an alley-oop for Theo and Russell fouls him. The other starters crowd around Russell, defending their teammate. Mack shoves Russell, but stays on his feet. Karl helps Theo up. Coach Gallant rushes over to stop the fight and check on Theo. e warns Russell. The other players make fun of Russell for his age.
The players set up for the free throw. Gallant returns to the sideline. Theo brushes past Russell. Russell glares back, but doesn’t say anything. He knows he’s outnumbered. The practice resumes. Karl plays well. Russell does not. On a fast break, Karl is covered by Russell. He passes to Aaron, whose shot gets blocked. Gallant pulls Karl aside and tells him he can take Russell, so he should be aggressive in that situation.
Karl drives down the court and matches up with Russell. Karl accelerates past Russell. Russell trips Karl. Karl falls face first to the floor. The crowd gasps. Coaches blow whistles. Karl quickly gets up, bleeding from his broken nose and busted lip. He rushes at Russell and tackles him. Russell’s head hits the floor hard and he’s knocked unconscious. Karl punches Russell until the coaches pull him away. A school nurse and paramedic rush to help the boys. Bevin and Franklin furiously take notes.
Judith walks into the living room, carrying the newspaper. She throws the folded paper in Dwight’s lap. Dwayne looks down at the paper, which is folded to Franklin’s story about the fight. A photo of Russell falling to the floor leads the story. He reads for a few seconds. He goes to talk to Karl.
Karl sits on the bed, reading a Luke Cage comic. Dwayne comes in and sits down beside Karl. Dwayne asks him about the fight. Karl says he was defending himself. Dwayne says you can't defend yourself at a game or practice. He's proud that Karl knocked him out wit one punch.
Kyra examines her Fat Mama statue. She has fixed the damage done by George. Allie arrives. They flirt. Kyra says she's starting a new statue tonight. Allie gets a call and has to leave. Allie tells Kyra to invite her over again. Kyra says she will. Allie gives her a kiss. Once Allie is out of sight, Kyra spins around in joy.
Keith peeks out from the house and sees Kyra climb through the hole in the fence and into the junkyard. He follows her through the fence. He goes down a different path than Kyra, not having seen which way she went. Kyra comes running back to get her tools. She doesn't see Keith.
Karl wanders through the maze, unsure of where he is. He hears movement to his left and turns to see one of the blue, many-legged snakes skitter into an old Pinto. He hurries away from it. He turns a corner and sees the monster, a large toad-like creature with unnaturally long legs. Its body is the size of a large dog. Its skin glows blue. It lets out a large belch. He turns and runs. The monster belches again and then chases him. He’s lucky and quickly finds his way back to the hole in the fence. Kyra stands on the other side, holding a hammer and screwdriver. She sees the fear on his face as he climbs through the hole in the fence. Karl screams as he cuts his arm on the fence. Kyra helps him through. The monster hops into view and Kyra screams. She holds the hammer up high and throws it at the monster. She hits it and it lets out an otherworldly yelp.
Irving lays on the metal bed in solitary, bandaged and sedated. Vaught wakes him up with threats. Barkley sneaks in to check on him. Irving doesn't think he's getting out of solitary alive. Barkley says they'll do something, but Irving says they'll just get killed, too.
Koy helps Warden Bryant to his desk. Bryant sits down gingerly, and can’t do it without help. Everyone from the BSCS is present except George. Bryant asks if the regulators have been re-installed yet? They haven't. They need to prioritize that or something will come through. Koy says the families might not take the money, he's worried. Bryant breaks out in a coughing fit. He’s in a lot of pain. Boone helps him get up and helps him to a couch to lay down. The meeting ends. Koy escorts the men out.
Billy and George debate who's going to kill the monster. They decide to both do it.
George follows Billy outside, holding their guns. They see the monster staring at the Early house. George bumps into a table and attracts the monster's attention. It rushes at them.
Dwayne stored the gun in the shed, but Judith tells him that's unsafe and he has to move it to the car. He reluctantly goes to move it.
The shed door opens and Dwayne walks out with the gun in his hand. He sees his kids and hears the monster's yelp. He turns toward the Hasley property. Dwayne pushes pas Kyra and moves to the fence. He sees the monster chase the scared Hasleys. He raises the gun and shoots the monster. Glowing green blood spurts from the wound. The monster yelps and limps off into the junkyard. Dwayne hugs his children.
