“The G.O.A.T.,” Episode 11: “The Playoffs”
Conan Jones bumps into Leah Owens in the hallway and Jones is awkward. He goes into the bathroom and injects Winstrol. Owens goes into the locker room and asks the team how they're doing. Bishop is nervous. Owens tells the team she is proud of them and tells them to kick ass.
Game: Playoffs, Round 1, Game 1. The Statesmen host the Philadelphia Porters. (2nd) Kendricks is pitching strong, hitting 100 mph on his fastballs. Kendricks bats and he singles. In the stands, cult member Rebecca has become a member of the B*stards. Bennett Walks. Pitts hits a home run to give the Statesmen a 3-0 lead. (7th) Kendricks has a chance to drive in more runs, but strikes out. Rebecca flirts with the B*stards leader, Richard. (8th) Pitching, Kendricks gives up a run-scoring single. Then he loads the bases and gives up a grand slam. (9th) Bishops strikes out and the Porters win 5-3. The Porters lead the series 1-0.
Alex Watkins releases a video saying that the "cancel culture" crowd has gotten McDaris and they're coming for baseball next and then America.
Inesta Morgan and Major Sumrell host Sports Central. As their wedding approaches, Major compliments his future in-laws. Sharon Alligood reports that the D.C. Statesmen won Game 2 6-0 with a dominating pitching performance from Jones and homers by Bennett and Pitts. Kendricks went hitless. The crawl reveals that President Winfrey is holding talks about Puerto Rico, the murder rate is up 327%, hurricanes keep going. This world is different: Florida State is #1 in college football. Joe Biden is a star QB for Buffalo. The Masked Deranger is a big horror movie franchise.
On NBS news, Brack leads by awkwardly asking if he gets invited to Inesta and Major's wedding. Inesta lies and says his invitation is in the mail. Brack has an interview with another cult whistleblower, Jacob.
Backstage, Alligood is questioned by Officer Steven Beck. Beck asks about her run-ins with McDaris. He asks for a copy of her schedule. Alligood says she doesn't have any specific complaints about McDaris, but he makes her feel uncomfortable. Beck asks if she knows where McDaris is, but she doesn't.
In the PDDC parking lot, O'Reilly approaches Cody. He read the files she gave him and he says she's right. Three suspects have been killed by Tucker now, O'Reilly saw the last one personally. He tells her that Rassi is the next to be killed.
Schur and Weiner meet with Levin. Cody is also present. The official reports Levin gave them say that Till and Myers escaped during attempts to apprehend them. Levin reacts with umbrage at the questions. Schur responds with whimsical legal threats. Levin says that they suspects are reportedly hiding out in Baltimore, they have evidence to that effect.
Benjamin sees Owens go into her office with Ms. Richardson and goes outside. She calls Manda Starr and asks now that the hostile takeover didn't succeed, what should she do. Starr tells her there's nothing she can do, she's useless. Starr will go on, but she doesn't need Benjamin.
Game: Playoffs, Round 1, Game 3. The Statesmen visit the Porters. (1st) With two runners on, Kendricks pops up and fails to advance them. In the dugout, the other coaches ignore Huebner. Bennett hits a three-run homer. Pitts hits a solo shot, the Statesmen are up 4-0. Duhart pitches and easily gets a 1-2-3 inning. (9th) Duhart is pulled for Delarosa who easily gets the last out. The Statesmen win 8-0 and lead the series 2-1.
Huebner visits Owens in her hotel room. He complains about being stripped of his duties. She tells him to be patient until the season is over.
Schur and Weiner interview Levin without Cody. While that is happening, Cody sneaks into Levin's office to plant the bug. While she's in the office, Tucker hovers outside and she can't get out. She plants the bug just as Levin returns. She pretends to have been sitting and waiting for Levin, but Levin kicks her out.
Cody is next to interview alone with Schur and Weiner. Schur tells her she is the only person that has consistently told him the truth in the precinct. Cody tells them that Till and Myers are dead. She's been running her own investigation with outside experts and she says it's time for them to meet the Task Force. Schur enthusiastically agrees.
O'Reilly is the next to interview with the Task Force. He spills everything.
In the PDDC parking lot, Snell approaches Cody. She says that Levin and the others lied to her and she's out. Snell reveals she was the one that sent the pictures of the bodies at Union Station. Cody tells her to talk to the Task Force. Snell apologizes and Cody accepts. O'Reilly was watching them and turns to leave. He is confronted by Tucker, who threatens him.
Eversmith calls Leila Rassi and sets up a meeting to talk about the Order.
Game: Playoffs, Round 1, Game 4. The Statesmen visit the Porters. (5th) Kendricks has given up three solo home runs. Huebner complains that he's still pitching, but the coaches ignore him. Frustrated, he walks into the locker room. Howell tells Glover that they'll give up on the silent treatment in the next round of the playoffs. Kendricks gives up four back-to-back home runs. Four home runs in a row and seven in a game both tie league records. (9th) Pulsipher hits a solo home run, but it's not enough and the Statesmen lose 11-3. The series is tied 2-2.
Gray, Glover, Langwieler and Howell sit in the dugout after the game. They decide not to let Kendricks pitch again for a while, since he was so bad in his recent outings. Huebner comes into the dugout and gets upset that they are meeting without him. They ignore him and he storms into the locker room.
Whaley wakes up from a heroin binge as McDaris calls him. McDaris says they should get together to talk about Kendricks when he gets back to D.C. Whaley says he's got a playing gig in the Netherlands and he's leaving the country. McDaris calls Tessell and Tessell almost looks up to him now. McDaris says that he wants to have Tessell on his web show when he gets back. He e-mails Tessell some information, in case something happens to him. McDaris listens to the cult-related "Fetuscake" song.
Outside, Esau has been recording McDaris and Whaley's conversation and he traces Whaley's location. He calls Abraham and tells them that Team A is ready to go and that Team B will go once Team A confirms success.
Bishop watches Pulp Fiction and the Christopher Walken scene comes on. He realizes Kendricks lied about the watch story.
Game: Playoffs, Round 1, Game 5. The Statesmen host the Porters. Before the game, Jones and Narvaez shake hands. Narvaez says he's confident that his team will win unless someone cheats. Jones doesn't respond to the barb. (3rd) Narvaez pitches with a 2-0 lead and Jones hits a solo home run, only the third home run of his career. In the stands, Rebecca puts her hand on Richard's leg, advancing the flirtation. (7th) Kendricks strikes out for the third time. Santana questions whether or not the term "golden sombrero" is racist. (9th) Down to their last three outs and with Speck on first, Glover sends Pulsipher in to pinch it for Kendricks. Kendricks almost resists, but thinks better of it. Pulsipher comes in and hits a home run. The Statesmen win the game 3-2 and the series 3-2. After the game, Jones ducks Narvaez.
Conan Jones hosts a huge party. Bishop, Brito and Parker arrive. Bishop plans on getting fucked up. Inside, Bishop joins the weed smokers. Doman is getting everybody to sign a canvas for Coach Gray and the injured players and the "squares" end up being the only players not at the party. Brito tells Bishop that Hernandez stopped calling him back after she got fired. Shotwell and Derby make fun of Doster for being gay until they find out he actually is gay and then they are respectful. The big muscle-bound players are playing beer pong while Speck, the Reliever Party Posse and Bishop go to do coke. Later, Bishop goes outside to smoke weed and runs into Betty with a date. It's awkward, she leaves. Bishop wants to go do more coke, but he and Speck run into Alex Watkins. Speck recognizes him and leaves Bishop to hear Watkins rant. Watkins tells Bishop his teammate is a killer. That there was a cult murder in Florida when they were down there. Bishop wants to ask more questions, but Speck returns with the muscle-bound players and they throw Watkins out of the party.
Later that night, Bishop and Jones confront Kendricks. Jones says he came back to play because of Kendricks and he wants him to concentrate so they can win the championship. Jones implies he did the steroids to win because of Kendricks. He leaves. Bishop asks Kendricks about Florida. At first, Kendricks brushes it off, but as Bishop continues to push, Kendricks insults him and leaves. Bishop goes off to get even more fucked up.
Michael Weisman hosts the Sunday Sports Chat Show. The guests include David Tessell, Sharon Alligood, Jonnie Travis and Ricky Womble. The hosts pick the winners of the various conference finals. The panel is split on whether or not the Smashers will advance. Tessell reports an exclusive that he's actually been in contact with Tina Warren, she is alive and in hiding.
Alton Nix calls Mary Billups and tells her that someone in the playoffs has failed a drug test.
Game: Conference Finals, Game 1. The Statesmen host the New York Smashers. Flowers is the starting pitcher and Doman starts instead of Bishop. He's out for two games with "family issues" and isn't at the stadium. In the stands, Richard and Rebecca holds hand. Mitch and Rhett make fun of them, but it doesn't matter, they're dating now. (1st) Umpire William Smith notes that Kendricks is looking MUCH better. Kendricks doubles. Bennett homers, giving D.C. a 2-0 lead. In the bottom half, Flowers gives up a homer, making it 2-1. (3rd) Kendricks hits a two-run shot. 4-1 Statesmen. (4th) Flowers gives up a run on a fielder's choice. D.C. 4-2. (6th) Kendricks doubles in a run. D.C. 5-2. Wheeler is now pitching for the Statesmen. He gives up a run. D.C. 5-3. (9th) Kendricks hits another home run. D.C. 7-3. Shotwell comes in with the game now 7-5 for D.C. and two runners on. In the bullpen, Wheeler and Derby are hungover and say that Shotwell is even worse. Youngblood's out sick, they all partied for days after the big blowout. Shotwell gives up a three-run homer and New York wins 8-7. The Smashers lead the series 1-0.
Chad and Shirley break into Jamelle Lewis' house, looking for ANYTHING. Chad finds her diary. It reveals that Lewis and Augustus Owens had a relationship and she's upset that she didn't get to be in charge of the team instead of Owens.
Game: Conference Finals, Game 2. The Statesmen host the Smashers. (1st) Jones strikes out the side. In the stands, Richard and Rebecca make out. Kendricks hits a two-run homer. (5th) Kendricks hits another homer. (9th) Jones leaves with D.C. up 3-2 and the bases loaded. Parker comes in and gets a Kendricks makes an error that allows two runs to score. Brito strikes out to end the game and the Smashers win 4-3. The Smashers lead the series 2-0.
Chad tracks down the IP address of the DDoS attacks against Shirley and they are traceable to the Red Sheep Ranch. They decide to visit with their police officer friends after they meet up with everyone.
Game 3 is rained out by Hurricane Donald, the worst hurricane ever.
Eversmith and Leila meet. Eversmith asks her about Augustus Owens and Leila gives her a history booklet about the cult that includes details on Augustus. Leila says the book doesn't include one fact, that Augustus was killed for violating the Order's virtues by falling in love with a Black woman.
Game: Conference Finals, Game 3. The Statesmen visit the Smashers. Bishop shows up ready to play. (2nd) Kendricks hits a solo homer. (9th) Youngblood pitches with a 1-0 lead, but gives up a run on a sac fly. (13th) Bishop hits an RBI-single to give D.C. the lead. In the bottom, Youngblood is still pitching and looks tired, but he concentrates and gets the final strikeout. The Statesmen win the game 2-1, but trail the series 2-1.
Benjamin sits in Owens' office, worried that she'll be fired. Owens doesn't fire her, noting that she "lost" the evidence against Benjamin. But Benjamin owes her a favor in the future.
Eversmith meets at the Pinch with Beck. Beck tells Eversmith that he has a trans aunt and that she felt bad that the other officers bullied Eversmith. Beck is the one that put the photos and files on the FTP server. Beck claims she's not like the other corrupt cops.
Game: Conference Finals, Game 4. The Statesmen visit the Smashers. (3rd) Through three innings, neither team has a hit. (4th) Rodgers walks three straight batters and gets pulled from the game. He tweaked his ankle and has to be helped off the field. Duhart comes in and gets a double play. The game remains scoreless. (9th) Gay gets a pinch hit home run. Gray makes sure that Youngblood is good after pitching bad earlier, but Howell is confident in him. Youngblood strikes out the side and the Statesmen win 1-0. Gray compliments Howell's coaching. The series is tied 2-2.
Levin meets with Mindy and Fernando of America PAC. They have given Levin $500k. In return, they want a prisoner, Robert Diggs released from jail if she wins the election. Outside, Cody listens to the recording of Levin's conversation with America PAC and drives away.
Jacob returns to the Red Sheep Ranch and meets with Manda Starr. He has completed scanning the entire city using the bus system, which they need for a big plan. Starr is secretive, but something big is going to happen at Game 7 of the USA Classic or the last game that the Statesmen are playing for the season. She congratulates Jacob on lying to Brack on TV, as he hasn't really left the cult.
Game: Conference Finals, Game 5. The Statesmen host the Smashers. Huebner begs Howell to talk to him. Howell does, telling Huebner that he "broke the code." Huebner apologizes to him, but Howell says it's not just him. Huebner asks why Kendricks is pitching. Howell says he's been hitting well and he always pitches well when he hits well. And they want to save Jones for Game 1 of the next round. (1st) Kendricks strikes out the side in the first while the B*stards cheer him on. He goes on to strike out 13 batters over the next few innings. Richard and Rebecca make out in the stands. (7th) Brito drives in a run. (9th) Kendricks gets a no hitter and the Statesmen win the game 1-0. The Statesmen win the series 3-2.
Jubilant with the victory, Glover and Lawthon join Howell in talking to Huebner again. Huebner apologizes to them. Glover says it's water under the bridge, but don't do it again. He refocuses them on winning the championship.
Owens and Gray bump into each other in the hallway. Owens compliments him. He says he couldn't have done it without Kendricks, which was her idea. She said it wasn't quite her idea, but whose idea it was is a secret.
In the stands, Richard tells the B*stards that Texas has beaten Atlanta and they will play the Statesmen in the next round. He also reports that the other match-up will be Los Angeles vs. Chicago.
At the seedy motel, the clerk goes into Alfred Whaley's room to find Whaley dead of an apparent heroin overdose.
