“The G.O.A.T.,” Episode 12: “The USA Classic”
Final Four, Game 1: The Statesmen host the Texas Angels. (1st) When Huebner arrives in the dugout, Gray and Langwieler ignore him, but Glover and Lawthon interact with him. In the stands, Rebecca and Richard's relationship has gotten serious. Jones gets a 1-2-3 inning. (3rd) Doman gets Pasco and Gay to sign the canvas for Gray. Bennett hits a two-run homer. (4th) Lombardi hits a two-run homer. (7th) Pitts hits a three-run homer. The Statesmen win 7-0. The Statesmen lead the series 1-0.
Sen. Bob Gibson does an ad for the National Cult Hotline, noting that cult-related activity is up more than 2000%.
Inesta Morgan and Major Sumrell host Sports Central. Their wedding is coming up soon. Ricky Womble reports that the L.A. Cougars are up over Chicago, two games to none. Sharon Alligood reports that the Statesmen won 6-1 and lead their series 2-0. The crawl reveals that Whaley died of an OD, the raging hurricane season continues and the heat wave is being investigated. This world is different: Duke is good at football, Joe Biden leads Buffalo to an undefeated record so far.
Jeffrey Brack hosts NBS News. He jokingly nags Inesta and Morgan about his wedding invitation and she assure him it's on the way. Brack reports that the Order has been crushed by the federal investigation.
Beck visits Alex Watkins in search of Dwayne McDaris. Beck accidentally lets Watkins know that McDaris is missing. He tells Watkins to forget about it Watkins lies and says he will.
Tucker harasses Anne Snell, warning her to keep quiet. She lets him know she's prepared to defend herself.
Eversmith asks Levin to reinstate her, but when Levin learns Eversmith has continued to work on the case while suspended, she fires Eversmith. Levin denies there is a cult in D.C. When Eversmith says she's been working with Cody, Levin fires Cody, too.
Final Four, Game 3: The Statesmen visit the Texas Angels. (1st) Duhart gives up four runs and Howell pulls him. (2nd) Kendricks strikes out. (6th) Delarosa and Wheeler give up home runs and the Angels lead 8-1. (8th) Brito gets a two-run homer, but it's too late. The Angels win 13-3. The Statesmen lead the series 2-1.
Alton Nix meets with Mary Billups. He reports that Jones failed a drug test. Billups says she's going to keep it quiet until after the Classic. She reveals that she's not really in charge and that Nix really doesn't want to know who is.
Shirley is at home washing dishes. She sees a blue reflection in the window and dodges an attack from Isaac/Jeremy Spencer. She hits him with a cast-iron skillet, breaking his jaw. He falls and hits his head on the stove. Shirley checks, but he's unconscious. She calls Cody and tells them all to come to her house. The others arrive and Eversmith leads an interrogation of Isaac. She threatens Isaac with a hefty prison sentence and he agrees to talk. Isaac confirms that the cult is Satanic and that magic works through murder, but that he didn't participate. He reveals that the cult has something planned for Game 7 of the USA Classic.
Jacob bribes the guard outside Leila Rassi's motel room and he sneaks in while she's pretending to sleep. She's ready for him, though, and uses a self defense baton to disarm him. She stabs him with his own dagger and kills him.
Lawyer Benjamin Stump is now representing the family of Kenneth Taylor, too. Schur tells Weiner to reach out to Stump so they can work together.
Final Four, Game 4: The Statesmen visit the Texas Angels. Rodgers gets the start, but Gray worries about his health status. (1st) Kendricks hits a grand slam. He goes into the dugout very cocky. When Santana challenges him, Kendricks goes to strike him, but Huebner steps in and punches him in the face. Kimbell gives Huebner respect. (4th) Rodgers gets out of a tough inning, but the score is now 4-2. (5th) Kendricks hits a two-run homer. Bennett and Pitts also homer for back-to-back-to-back jacks. (8th) Bishop homers. The Statesmen win 10-2. The Statesmen lead the series 3-1.
Tucker waits for O'Reilly outside the precinct and he threatens O'Reilly. It escalates into a fist fight and O'Reilly quickly gets the upper hand a beats Tucker off. Tucker runs off, but leaves with a threat.
Eversmith, Cody, Shirley, Chad, Ashley and Leila meet to put the details together. Cody reveals that Levin is engaged in bribery, but probably not the Order. Shirley says Jamelle Lewis may be involved. She had a relationship with Augustus Owens and is upset that Leah got the team in the will. Eversmith discovered that the Owens family owned slaves and cashed out before the war. Augustus disowned Leah's mother and her father was killed by a suicide. Her mother committed suicide and Augustus raised Leah. Chad awkwardly asks why Leah is Black if Augustus was white, but Leila reveals he's not white, but of mixed race. Eversmith asks if Leila knows of evidence at the Ranch. Leila says there's a secret room that she hasn't been to, but it is their best chance. They ask her to go back in, saying they'll provide back-up. Cody is nervous about it and warns her it's dangerous. Leila doesn't think the members would recognize her and she could get in and out safely as long as she avoids the cult's leaders. Leila agrees to do it.
Leila sneaks back into the Red Sheep Ranch and makes her way towards the secret door. She tries the keypad, but can't get in. She turns to leave and bumps into Kendricks, who is dressed in cult gear. He doesn't know her, so he walks away. She hides in the women's room for a half an hour once she spots Starr and Abraham talking outside the bathroom. She leaves and is almost recognized by Abraham.
Final Four, Game 5: The Statesmen host the Texas Angels. In the stands, Rebecca brings gifts for the B*stards. She says she'll give Richard his gift later, wink, wink. (1st) Flowers gets the start, but he doesn't look good. He gives up four and they pull him and bring in Malay. (4th) Speck drives in two runs to make it 4-3. (5th) Parker gives up a run, making it 5-3. (7th) Speck drives in a run, making it 6-3. (8th) The Angels score two, cutting the lead to 6-5. (9th) Pasco drives in a run. D.C. wins the game 7-5. The Statesmen win the series 4-1.
Bishop, Kendricks and Jones get drinks at Punk/Rap Karaoke Night. Jones asks Bishop about missing two playoff games and Bishop doesn't really say anything. He says he's focused now, though, and asks if Jones and Kendricks are focused. They both say they are, Kendricks in a somewhat menacing way. Upstairs, Bishop runs into Betty and it's awkward. Neither can change, so they stay distanced.
Michael Weisman hosts the Sunday Sports Chat Show. His guests are David Tessell, Sharon Alligood, Ricky Womble and Edith Merman. They discuss who is going to win the USA Classic. Everyone except Tessell thinks the Statesmen will win easily. Tessell says they won't win.
Tessell calls McDaris but gets voice mail. He calls the motel and the clerk says McDaris isn't there, but he hasn't checked out. Tessell records a video in the style of McDaris, focused on the fact that Kendricks lied about his name and age.
Monika Aro calls to check on Janice Taylor. Janice is calm about Whaley's death and happy that her job transfer came through.
The USA Classic, Game 1: The Statesmen host the Los Angeles Cougars. Nix confronts Jones before the game and threatens him. Jones runs into Chester and Riggins, who have been traded to Los Angeles. (1st) Jones gets in trouble, but gets out of it to keep the game hitless. (5th) Chester breaks up Jones' no-hitter. (9th) Jones gives up a solo homer. In the stands, Rebecca steadies a nervous Richard. Speck hits it hard, but he's out. Los Angeles wins 1-0. The Cougars lead the series 1-0.
Schur and Weiner lead a series of raids on poverty-stricken homes. They find nothing at the first two, but discover a homeless man at the third. They question the homeless man and he tells them that everybody knows cops killed Till, Meyers and Taylor.
Eversmith, Cody, Shirley, Chad and Ashley are preparing their presentation for the Task Force when Leila arrives. She lets them know that she saw Kendricks with the cult members.
The USA Classic, Game 2: The Statesmen host the Los Angeles Cougars. (1st) Kendricks is pitching, but the coaches think he might be working too hard too early. He gives up a three-run homer. In the bottom of the inning, he hits a three-run homer. (5th) Kendricks gives up a grand slam and is pulled from the game. (9th) Brito is the last out of the game. Los Angeles wins 9-3. The Cougars lead the series 2-0.
Schur and Weiner interview Anne Snell. She tells them that she can help the Task Force find the bodies of Till, Meyers and others, because she helped bury them. They go to the Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve and pull two bodies from the water.
The USA Classic, Game 3: The Statesmen visit the Los Angeles Cougars. (1st) Duhart gives up a solo homer. The players learn that Albert Whaley has died. Glover goes to tell Gray, but Gray has already heard. Gray decides not to speak to the team about it and tells Glover not to do a speech, either. (5th) Kendricks drives in three runs on a double. Bennett homers and the Statesmen lead 5-1. (8th) Duhart is pulled and Shotwell comes in. He gets the outs. D.C. wins 7-1. The Cougars lead the series 2-1.
Esau tells Abraham that he took care of Whaley and McDaris. Abraham tells Esau to check out Alex Watkins and if he can't be influenced, he'll be taken care of.
Tessell calls Alligood and tells her that McDaris is missing and that foul play is expected.
Benjamin visits Owens and gives her the crimson brooch. Now Benjamin wants a favor from Owens in return. Owens respects Benjamin's game.
The USA Classic, Game 4: The Statesmen visit the Los Angeles Cougars. (1st) Riggins pitches for the Cougars, but gives up a two-run homer. (4th) Purvis pitches for the Statesmen. He gives up 2. (5th) Pompey gets a pinch-hit grand slam. D.C. wins 6-2. The series is tied 2-2.
Gray talks on the phone and says that, win or lose, he's retiring after the classic. Ferd Langwieler overhears him.
Paige, Eversmith, Hernandez, Shirley and Chad present to Schur and Weiner. Eversmith tells them that they have evidence that a murderous Satanic cult is killing people and the conspiracy is being hidden by a variety of people. The corruption could go very high up the ladder.
The USA Classic, Game 5: The Statesmen host the Cougars. Rebecca brings cookies for the B*stards. She promises something big for game 7 and she needs Richard's help, which he offers freely. (1st) Jones strikes out the side. (3rd) The Statesmen score twice. (6th) Jones gives up two runs and the Cougars are ahead 3-2. He gets pulled from the game. (9th) Chester drives in another run. Los Angeles wins 4-2. The Cougars lead the series 3-2.
Glover, Howell, Langwieler, Lawthon, Kimbell and Tannehill discuss the news of Gray's retirement. They are convinced that Huebner is going to get the job next. They discuss walking out if that happens. Glover openly refuses to walk out and Lawthon doesn't commit one way or the other.
Schur orders arrests to be conducted: Tucker, Mindy and Fernando of America PAC, Captain Levin, Simon Meyers and Mayor Fair.
The USA Classic, Game 6: The Statesmen visit the Los Angeles Cougars. Kendricks gets the start. (2nd) Chester hits a grand slam and L.A. leads 5-0. Kendricks drives in two. (5th) Pitts hits a solo shot. (6th) Speck drives in a run and L.A.'s lead is down to 5-4. Riggins pitches for L.A., but he walks in a run to tie the game. (10th) Pulsipher hits a solo homer. D.C. wins 6-5. The series is tied 3-3.
Schur prepares a team of officers to raid the Red Sheep Ranch. Schur gets a call from Sen. Gibson telling him to shut the Task Force down until after the baseball series is over. Shirley and the gang decide they're going to raid the Ranch anyway. Schur agrees to serve as backup, but once Cody reveals she's been fired, Schur says he and Weiner are coming along as the official officers of record. The start to plan the raid.
A hotel maid finds Dwayne McDaris dead of a heroin overdose.
