“The G.O.A.T.,” Episode 13: “Game 7”
A chorus of children sings "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" over a series of images. Parents give a newborn his first baseball mit. The mother takes the kid to his first Statesmen game. The kid gets a hit playing litle league. The boy hits a home run in high school. The boy performs well for scouts. The boy hits a home run in the College World Series. The boy, now a man, and his parents go to Game 7 of the USA Baseball Classic. The Statesmen starters for the game are introduced. Umpire William Smith says play ball!
Schur, Weiner, Eversmith and Cody lead the way towards the Red Sheep Ranch, sneaking onto the remote property through the forest. At a safe distance behind, Ashley, Chad and Shirley follow. As they get closer to the Ranch, they come across seemingly endless rows of abandoned or stolen cars. They arrive at the edge of the forest, overlooking a clearing where the Ranch sits quietly.
The rain goes away and the crew prepares the field for Game 7. Haywood Doman gives Harold Gray the canvas signed by all the players. Everyone applauds Gray.
Game: (1st) Duhart gets the start for D.C. He strikes out the first batter. The second batter, Pine, lines the ball off of Duhart's head, but Brito catches it for the out. Duhart is pulled from the game. Conan Jones comes in to replace him. Gray questions Jones, but Howell vouches for him and Gray accepts Howell's judgment. In the bottom of the first, Doster singles. Speck walks. Lombardi hits into a fielder's choice. Kendricks singles to drive in one. Bennett singles to drive in another. Pitts strikes out. Bishop strikes out.
At the Ranch, the rain clears up and the gang takes off their rain gear and heads towards the quiet Fulfillment Center. Cody and Eversmith break down the door and they go inside. The building is empty. They go into the Temple room and are freaked out by the blood.
Game: (2nd) Brito Walks. Jones flies out. Doster singles. Speck doubles, driving in two runs. With a 4-0 lead, the Statesmen begin to party in the dugout. Glover calms them down, noting it's only the second inning. Lombardi flies out. In the Statesmen bullpen, Malay asks why the Cougars are leaving their starter in. They note that the Cougars don't have that good a bullpen. They start to get cocky and rowdy. Tannehill calms them down. Kendricks strikes out.
Schur, Weiner, Cody and Eversmith stand before the secret door. Eversmith brings in fancy tech to open the locked door. It leads to a tight hallway filled with shelves that are filled with the personal effects and clothes of past victims. A LOT of past victims. It also contains various police and fire fighter uniforms. And various body parts and bones and skulls are saved as well.
Game: (3rd) Ricardo singles off Jones. Jones walks Picard. Gray says to keep Jones on a short leash and they start warming up Delarosa and Wheeler. Jones gets out of the inning without giving up a run.
At the back of the secret hallway, Chad tries to open a fancy lock. They can't open it so they call in a specialist and wait. The specialist, Chelle, shows up and is able to get the door open. Chad and Chelle flirt. The door leads to Manda Starr's quarters and inside they find plans for a terrorist attack on Game 7 and a diary where Cam Kendricks seems to claim he's behind the Order and the terrorist attack. They leave the Ranch and head towards the stadium, but it's going to take a while to get there.
Game: (3rd) Bennett doubles. Pitts is walked intentionally. Bishop bunts for a single. The Cougars change pitchers. Brito strikes out. Jones hits into a double play.
Manda Starr rides in her limo, giving orders to Abraham. She tells him to release damning documents bout Fair, Levin and Meyers, but not Owens.
Once they are able to get a signal, Schur calls and has the Task Force meet them at the stadium, saying there is evidence of a bomb.
Around town, the cult members block routes to and from the stadium and block emergency vehicles. They padlock the exit doors outside the stadium and block stairwells inside. Esau and the other cult members have taken over the stadium's security center. Two police officers knock on the door and the cult members kill them. Outside the stadium, emergency and law enforcement vehicles have their tires slashed.
Game: (4th) Craig Glover notes that his son, who plays for the Cougars, has always struggled against Jones. Jones gives up a double. Chester, who played for D.C. earlier in the season, drives in a run. Jones gets out of the inning, but the score is now D.C. 4, L.A. 2.
At PDDC, Rita Thompson tells Steven Beck that phones and e-mail are down.
Game: (4th) Doster singles. Speck singles. Lombardi hits a sacrifice fly. D.C. leads 5-2.
In Section B, Rebecca tells Richard that she wants to bring the banner into the stadium. She can't it through security, though, because the poles are made of metal. She flirts with him and he says he can get it through the concessions entrance, he knows a guy.
Game: (5th) Pine hits a solo shot. D.C. 5, L.A. 3.
Rebecca and Richard get the poles and vinyl banner from her truck. They bring the banner inside with the help of the concessions guy who sends them up via freight elevator. They sneakily arrive at their seats.
Game: (5th) Kendricks doubles. Bennett doubles. Pitts singles. Bishop singles. D.C. 7, L.A. 3.
Abraham explains to Starr how the bomb works. It includes a chemical weapon that, if fully deployed, will affect thousands, if not more, and is deadly.
Leila Rassi and Officer Mitchell O'Reilly arrive at the stadium. Cody texts that they will arrive soon.
Richard asks Rebecca how to put the banner together and she shows him how. She says to wait until the seventh inning stretch to actually put them together.
Game: (6th) Kendricks makes an error and Gyllenhall is safe at second.
Cody and the gang, along with dozens of other cops arrive, but the crowd is too loud for anyone inside to hear them. O'Reilly tells them that Kendricks is on the field. They head that way, but Schur says to wait until he's as far away from the fans as possible.
Game (6th): Jones pitches, but is distracted by cops flooding into the stadium. He gives up a two-run homer. D.C. 7, L.A. 5.
Howell meets on the mound with Jones and the infielders, pulling the pitcher from the game. Schur sees Kendricks with them and orders the cops to rush the field.
Rebecca tells Richard to go ahead and put the banner together. She says she has to go get tape, but he should put it together while she's gone.
She kisses him goodbye and leaves. Leila spots Rebecca on the concourse and O'Reilly and several officers tackle her. Cody arrives and punches Rebecca until she tells everyone where the bomb is. They rush off in that direction.
Kendricks is arrested and put in cuffs. The crowd boos as he's walked off the field. Cody and the others frantically search for the bomb. O'Reilly spots it. The crowd starts to panic. Cody pulls her gun to shoot Richard, but, oblivious. He puts the poles together and ignites the chemicals. They explode, killing Richard and those around him instantly. A gas cloud forms and those who breathe it in get sick and die. It starts to spread and people jump over the wall to get away from it.
As more and more people rush the field and flee the gas, Kendricks escapes in the chaos.
Inesta Morgan and Major Sumrell host Sports Central. They are staying away from jokes because of the terrorist attack. 17 people have been killed and 200 others have been hospitalized. Cam Kendricks is said to be the mastermind behind the whole thing. Mary Billups announces that the season is over, there isn't a champion and there never will be. She resigns, but the league confirms her announcements. The crawl announces that Fair, Levin and Meyer are implicated in cult bribes; Doster and Kimbell are engaged; Puerto Rico gained it's independence; the hurricane and heat waves will continue next year.
Inesta and Major get married at the Colin Kaeprnick winery. Jeffrey Brack is in attendance.
Victims last moments: A group of actors and actresses are the finalists for a new Blair Witch movie: Kaja Ballo, Phil Gale, Joseph Havenith, Bianca Leno, Noah Lofton, Lisa McPherson, Stacy Meyer, Steve Parent. They are going to do final auditions on the set and are escorted through a doorway by Rebecca and Abraham.
Owens meets with Lewis and Benjamin. None of them are leaving and they are still the only Black women running a pro sports team. The value of the team has decreased, but they are all committed to fixing it.
Victims last moments: A couple walks out of the Pinch: Abbie Peet, Brent Dorn. They want the night to continue, but Brent has to be at work early the next morning. She walks down an alley and two men accost her. Brent rushes to help her, but the men disappear. Once Brent gets close, the mean leap out of the shadows and attack.
Alton Nix lost re-election as union president, getting less than 30% of the vote. He's going fishing.
Victims last moments: A couple of swingers are waiting in their Miami mansion for a boy toy to show up: Nellie Pitezel, Ben Pitezel. Their "date" shows up and it's Kendricks.
Tina Warren speaks at Maya Marin's funeral. She announces a scholarship fund at UCLA in Maya's honor.
Victims last moments: A couple canoes through Dyke Marsh: Elle Perkins, Matt Stewart. A group of SCUBA divers pop up and surround them.
Cody Paige arrives for her first day of work as part of the Task Force. They're going to track down the cult members. All of them.
Victims last moments: Two couples relax in a cabin in the woods: Herbert Pfaff, Sherry Tate, Kathy Walicki, Sue Walicki. They are about to go to bed, but a fire engine arrives outside and fire fighters tell them the cabin has a gas leak. They step outside with the lead fire fighter, who is Abraham.
Brice Eversmith is the new PDDC captain. She is committed to three things: technology, transparency and integrity. She's going to require all officers to get ethics training.
Victims last moments: Marshall Applegate leaves the Pinch and is going to meet a hook-up from an app. The cult members follow him down the street.
Harold Gray retires. He says he was a fighter, but he lost. There's no way he could handle what the press is saying about him, so he's leaving. He asks who recommended Kendricks to her, but she doesn't answer. He spits on her carpet.
Victims last moments: A wedding party plays softball on private property: Pearl Connor, Minnie Williams, Julia Smith, Edna Van Tassel, Henry McKenzie, Johnny Boyle, George Longcor, William York, John Greary, Red Smith, Jack Bogart, Adam Jones, Mary Ann Longcor, Mary Jane Longcor, Abigail Roberts, Elvira Bender. Esau, Abraham, Jacob and Rebecca show up to join the game. George hands Jacob an aluminum.
Alvin Huebner is named the new manager. He tears down Gray's Rules. Four of the coaches resign, leaving only Glover and Lawthon.
Victims last moments: Tim Whitman talks about a business deal on the phone in his fancy apartment. Abraham sneaks up and attacks him.
Bishop drunkenly closes down the Pinch. Annie calls him a car. He says he's lost. She advises him that there's always another day and all you can do is keep trying. As he's leaving, he throws his animal tooth necklace in the trash and gets in the car. Someone retrieves the necklace.
Victims last moments: Ben Brown and Wendy McCrotty exit union station to get in MooVers rideshare car. The car arrives and the driver is Kendricks.
Ashley Hernandez has been hired as the Statesmen's new communications director. Alfredo Brito visits her office. She explains why she ghosted him and he kisses her and pretends like the bad stuff never happened.
Victims last moments: Kendricks comes across Julie Croteau at a rest stop in Arizona. Her boyfriend left her there after a fight. He flirts with her, tells her he's a baseball player and offers her a ride to D.C., where she was headed.
Shirley Muldoon is the new editor of the Washington Dispatch. She has hired Chad as IT director and Rita Thompson as office manager. A young reporter, Eddie, has questions and wants to investigate Chad.
Victims last moments: Maya Marin arrives home. Seconds later, Kendricks arrives and assaults her.
Chad writes about obtaining a baseball bat supposedly used in one of Cam Kendricks' murders. In the background, we see that Chad has also obtained Savoy Bishop's animal tooth necklace.
Victims last moments: Albert Whaley is high when the prostitute he ordered arrives. It's Rebecca. And Abraham is with her.
Old video shows an interview with Edith Merman and Jones. She asks him why he plays the game. He expresses a love of the game and that his biggest rush is proving that he can defeat others all by himself.
Jones and Shirley meet at the Pinch. Dan tears down Conan's reserved table sign. Shirley says they could write a book, but he says he's done with baseball and he's going fishing.
Conan Jones and Harold Gray sit fishing in the middle of nowhere, all alone.
Victims last moments: Dwyane McDaris sleeps in a seedy motel. A knock at the door wakes him up. He answers and it is Esau and Jacob, who say they are his drug dealers, much to his surprise.
Kendricks hides in a seedy hotel room.
Victims last moments: Richard, Rhett, Mitch and the B*stards happily walk into the stadium holding their Game 7 tickets. They meet Rebecca at the stadium entrance and go inside.
The last shot is of a poster in what used to be Harold Gray's office enthusiastically promoting season tickets for next year.
