The G.O.A.T., Episode 5, “Home Game”
Gray fishes alone on Tuckahoe Lake. Doman and his family ride four-wheelers across his farm. Speck plays pool and drinks in a dive bar. Alex Levin works in her fancy home garden. Sharon Alligood visits the Museum of Natural History and runs into Craig Glover, who is with his son.
Game: The Statesmen visit the St. Louis Wolves. (1st) Kendricks strikes out the leadoff hitter. (4th) Kendricks strikes out his 10th batter. (6th) Pulsipher plays third base but struggles at the plate. Chester complains about being benched for Pulsipher, but Whaley angrily rebuffs him. (7th) Kendricks has struck out 10 batters in a row, for 20 total, both tying records. Glover explains to Pompey that no one is supposed to talk to a player who is on a streak and might break a record. Whaley overhears this and rudely talks to Kendricks anyway. Huebner sees this and tosses Whaley out of the dugout. Glover and Gray back up Huebner and Whaley is shocked, but leaves. (8th) The game is still scoreless. Chester pinch hits for Pulsipher and fails to run out a grounder, but the defense makes an error and his lack of hustle stops him from getting to second. Gray yanks Chester from the game. Whaley asks to be put in, but is ignored. Gray puts Pompey in. Pompey does some smart base-running and is in position to score. Gay drives him in and the Statesmen go up 1-0. (9th) Kendricks struggles, and walks two straight batters. Huebner wants him pulled so they can win the game, Gray wants him to stay in to get the record. Kendricks gets a double play ball and is down to one out. Bishop stalls to give Kendricks time. Kendricks gets the strikeout and breaks the record.
Jones appears in a throwback commercial for Barbarian travel guides.
Inesta Morgan and Major Sumrell host Sports Central. The Sports Central Crawl reveals: This is the hottest summer ever. Puerto Rico unrest grows. Investigations launch into Wild Night. This world is different: Cardiomyopathy is a famous race horse, Sharon Stone is a famous tennis player, Seth Rogen is a famous golfer, Ken Griffey is a Formula 1 racer.
Inesta reports that Cam has set a record by driving in a run in 17 consecutive games. Alligood notices that Inesta and Major are flirty. The Statesmen move into first place for the first time in three years. They lead the Eastern Conference, two games ahead of the Smashers and Colonials. The Texas Angels and Atlanta Peaches are fighting it out for the lead in the Southern Conference.
Jeffrey Brack reports on Wild Night, where $1 million in damages were done and more than 30 people hospitalized.
Inesta and Major flirt off camera, both complementing each other's work. He jokingly invites her to dinner, but she doesn't respond.
Ashley Hernandez joins Kendricks in a conference room. Kendricks is rude and uninterested. She tries to get information about his interests or background, but Kendricks doesn't respond. He leaves the whole endorsements process up to her with no input. Ashley leaves her office somewhat bewildered and runs into Brito. They are clearly into each other. She needs a win and asks him out. He says yes.
Levin introduces new officer Jeremy Spencer as the mayor has increased their budget. Tucker and O'Reilly have discovered two suspects, Clifford Myers and Pervis Till. Eversmith and Cody completely reject the suspects. Cody asks about Vivian Carlton and Eversmith says she's a hack. Cody has to see her for mandatory counseling. Cody reveals she saw Tucker racially assault a suspect, Tim Gray, leading him to losing an eye. Cody reported it, but Lewis swept it under the rug and Cody has been a target ever since.
Shirley gets a call from an anonymous source to meet her at the Pinch that night. She texts Chad who agrees to meet her there for safety. It takes him a bit, but he agrees.
Game: (6th) Jones is losing 5-2 to the Seattle Cobras. He gets a strikeout, but he tweaks his elbow. (7th) Jones is still in and he gives up a two-run hit. Howell pulls him from the game. Someone in the stands has a sign that says "McDaris is Right." Kendricks is absent from the game and Whaley is upset. Several of the other younger players also take some umbrage at Kendricks' absence.
Dr. Carter looks at an x-ray of Jones' elbow and warns him that his injuries aren't getting better.
Kendricks arrives and Whaley confronts him. Whaley accuses him of using PEDs and Kendricks punches him hard enough to break his nose. Clearly Kendricks has boxing in his past. Speck and Pitts pull Kendricks off Whaley. Owens walks in and sees the mess and immediately leaves.
Lewis and her friend Gayle arrive at the spa. Lewis tweaked her ankle playing tennis and needs Gayle's assistance. They go inside and strip down for massages. Private investigator Applegate follows them and takes compromising pictures from a back window. He thinks they are lesbians, but they are simply here for a massage. Applegate calls Owens and tells her he has something great for her.
Chuck Chester sleeps in past 4 p.m. Ronnie Pitts works out. Michael Weisman works from home. Vern Howell tries making a sourdough. Doster and Kimbell go mountain climbing.
Shirley waits for Chad outside the Pinch, but he doesn't come. She goes inside. She talks to Annie and then is approached by Applegate. He has a package for her, but doesn't know what it is. He says he was very well paid to deliver it and leaves. Inside the package is an article that says "cult murder shocks city" and a copy of the police report that describes a murder scene EXACTLY like those done in D.C.
Shirley leaves the Pinch and cuts through a park. Out of the dark, cult member Abraham attacks her. He has a cult tattoo and hoodie on. Shirley uses her self defense training to defeat him. She breaks his hand and escapes.
Game: (4th) Riggins is pitching, but having a tough time. The Cobras lead 4-3. Riggins gets a double play ball, but BOTH Chester and Kendricks make errors that lead to the Cobras leading 7-3. (5th) Bishop gets hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, cutting the lead to 7-4. (9th) Kendricks is at the plate with two outs and two strikes. He hits a grand slam to win the game. Wheeler gets his 10th career victory.
Riggins waits for Kendricks in the locker room, seething. Riggins questions him, but Kendricks brushes him off. Riggins pushes and Kendricks makes a joke about his mother. Enraged, Riggins rushes Kendricks, but Kendricks switches into his boxing stance again and he easily gets the upper hand on Riggins, punching him in the face three times. Riggins falls to the ground and Jones and Bishop pull Kendricks away.
Owens meets with Howell. They agree to trade Riggins. Owens meets with Huebner. Huebner is focused on winning and Kendricks is helping them win. Whaley and Riggins not so much. Huebner and Owens seem to be on the same page. Huebner suggests they trade for a Hawks player, Gus Bennett, to solve their third base problems. Owens suggests Huebner might get the manager job if Gray is gone.
Owens meets with Applegate. He shows her "proof" that Lewis is a lesbian. Owens is furious, telling him that being a lesbian isn't a scandal and that Lewis isn't a lesbian. She tells Applegate to find something real or he's fired.
Shirley knocks on Chad's door and he answers slowly. She's upset with him because he forgot to show up. She tells him that she was attacked and he tries to comfort her, but she's mad at him. He apologizes pretty easily and she softens.
Michael Weisman hosts the Sunday Sports Chat Show with guests: David Tessell, Sharon Alligood, Ricky Womble and Dwayne McDaris. Topics include: Are the Statesmen for real now? Is Purvis better than Riggins? Can the Statesmen get even better?
Alligood notes team is 20-5 in May. Other guests are starting to believe in the Statesmen. Followers of McDaris' complaints about Statesmen are now called McDaris' Minions. Chaka Purvis is too good for the minors.
Ashley Hernandez tells Kendricks she got him a commercial. The contract is for $5 million for ThunderBrew. Kendricks is excited.
Owens, Lewis and Benjamin meet with Mary Billups and Alton Nix. Billups tells Owens to get the team in-fighting under control before it affects attendance. Owens tries to make it clear she has everything under control, but Billups lets her know her ownership of the team was only barely approved and that she can't afford to lose any support if she wants to keep the team.
Lombardi hosts a big cookout. Grady Duhart ministers to freshmen at Catholic University. Ferd Langwieler coaches a little league team and does it well, teaching the young players well. Lawthon sits in a chair avoiding doing exercises. His daughter reminds him and he tries a few exercises before he decides to drink instead. On their off night from the Pinch, Dan and Annie go to a Washington Fog Horns hockey game. Owens finishes a business transaction on the phone, then visits a female masseuse/escort.
Kendricks gets out of a limo at the Oscars and walks the red carpet while fans go crazy. Inside, some of the famous people recognize Kendricks and are in awe of him.
A massive party is taking place at the Robinwood Farm, owned by Reid Carlin, a big fan of the team. Jones introduces Bishop to Carlin. They meet the entire bullpen, who are partying and call themselves the Reliever Party Patrol. Jones takes a toke from a joint and Betty flirts with Bishop. Several of the players blow weed smoke into Bishop's face, getting him very high. Betty leaves and Bishop goes looking for her, wandering through the party in a pot-fueled haze. He sees Pitts, Lombardi and Pulsipher worrying about Whaley's attitude and Bishop says Whaley wants to kill Kendricks. Brito and Jones talk about Hernandez asking Brito out. Chester wanders around drunk and/or high. Bishop makes fun of Doman's facial hair. Pompey is super drunk. Pulsipher and Flowers try to get Bishop to drink some water. Doster makes fun of Pitts. Speck is drinking super expensive alcohol.
Bishop and Betty lay in bed, fully clothed and chatting. Bishop is freaking out because he's high, but Betty calms him. She gives him a massage and he relaxes. He tells her that the home run he hit was his first since high school. They kiss. They fall asleep.
At the Vanity Fair Oscars Party, Kendricks arrives and goes straight to the bar and starts drinking heavily. He's rude to the bartender. Actress Tina Warren comes up and Kendricks gets her a drink. They flirt. Kendricks is awkward at first, but he's sharp and she likes him. She watches baseball and knows who he is, but she's a Smashers fan. She's nominated for an Oscar and her sister is nominated for supporting actress for the same movie. It's Oscars night. She's happy. She's bold. She offers him the key to her hotel room.
Bishop and Betty slept over at the farm, but didn't have sex. She questions him because he didn't try to sleep with her. Bishop said he didn't want it to be just about sex. Betty confirms that he does actually like sex. He says she asks a lot of questions, she responds that he answers them. He's the only player that ever took the time to answer her questions as if she matters apart from who her mom is. Bishop doesn't know that her mom is the president of the USBL. She says he likes him and he says the feeling is mutual.
