The G.O.A.T., Episode 6, “On the Road Again”
Ivan Pasco packs his suitcase in the busy home he shares with many family members. Pasco walks through the airport, the other players largely ignore him. He arrives at the fancy hotel the team is staying at, has trouble getting into his room and then discovers the room is better than any place he's ever stayed before.
Winston Pulsipher takes hitting practice with Huebner before the game. Clint Youngblood visits the Hollywood Planet restaurant in Times Square and orders a massive meal and several drinks before the game. Several Frat Bros try to buy him a drink, but since he's rich, he buys them drinks instead. Justin Tannehill zooms with seemingly his entire family. Conan Jones is checked out by Dr. Carter, who warns him that he's overdoing it.
Game: The Statesmen visit the New York Hawks. (1st) Kendricks gets two singles in the first inning and the team goes up 8-0. Jones is pitching, but he's struggling. Gus Bennett hits a grand slam to cut the lead in half. (3rd) Kendricks gets a double. (5th) Kendricks gets two singles and the score is now 16-5. Kendricks' hitting starts to worry Gray. Bennett hits another homer off of Jones to cut the score to 16-8. Jones is pulled and replaced with Delarosa. (7th) Kendricks gets three hits in the inning, including a home-run that leads to a 17-run inning. (9th) Kendricks gets another single, his ninth hit of the game (a homer, two doubles and six singles). The final score is 33-8.
Alligood interviews Kendricks about the records he set in the game: nine hits, seven runs, three hits in an inning, three runs in an inning. He's in awe of himself and a bad interview. Huebner walks by and Alligood pulls him into the interview. She asks him about the team records set: 33 runs, 17 runs in an inning, seven players setting career highs in at least one stat. Huebner claims credit and Gray gives him side-eye.
Kendricks stars in an ad for ThunderBrew sports drink.
Inesta Morgan and Major Sumrell host Sports Central. The Sports Central Crawl reveals: Record hurricane season. Heat wave leads to deaths. This world is different: Roberto Clemente is an ambassador, Mickey Dolenz is a cyclist, Peru is good at international soccer, the Washington Fog Horns play in the Stanley Cup for the third straight year.
Inesta asks Major out on a date on air. He enthusiastically agrees. A breaking news bulletin is handed to them. The USBL has launched an investigation into Kendricks and will be testing him for PEDs. Union president Alton Nix comes on to answer questions about the investigation, but he flubs the interview and accidentally suggests that Kendricks could be guilty, which Major pounces on.
Jeffrey Brack interviews Captain Alex Levin about the Wild Night riots and the murders, but Levin doesn't reveal anything of importance.
Whaley sneaks into the virtually empty stadium. He bumps into Benjamin and they chat. He awkwardly explains why he isn't on the road with the team. Once she leaves, he goes into the locker room and steals a pair of Kendricks' underwear as DNA evidence. Janice the custodian sees him, but she doesn't see her.
Howell is having a drink when Kit Riggins knocks on his door. Riggins comes in and tells Howell that his mother recently died of cancer and that's why he fought with Kendricks. Howell respects Riggins' wishes and says he'll try to find a trade for him.
Levin leads the latest PDDC briefing. More new officers have been hired. Rita brings in a white board with Clifford Myers and Pervis Till, who are the suspects in the killings, which Levin now admits are related. A full manhunt is now underway to find them. Levin assigns new officer Jeremy Spencer to work with Eversmith and Cody.
Whaley knocks on Tessell's hotel room. Tessell is unpleasantly surprised. Whaley invites himself in, but Tessell says no. Whaley asks about the evidence about Kendricks. Tessell says it raises questions but isn't much. Whaley gives him Kendricks' underwear for DNA testing, but Tessell is skeptical. Against his better judgment, Tessell takes them, but he makes no promises.
Brito and Hernandez eat dinner at Vito's Mama's Place, an exclusive Italian restaurant. Brito eats a standard steak and potato, but Ashley is more adventurous. Brito flew back from New York for this date. Ashley mentions Kendricks’ new commercial and Brito asks if she could get him Spanish-language endorsements. She says definitely. She sees through the media hype and sees him for his actual value, he's super good at defense on a team that has defensive problems. He's also great at getting on base. They are very into each other.
Shirley waits outside the Pinch for Chad, afraid he's not going to show again. She's about to go inside when he arrives.
Alton Nix takes a phone call from an unknown caller. Nix is in trouble for his bad media appearance and needs to fix it.
Shirley and Chad arrive at the Pinch to meet Cody and Eversmith in the basement for a private discussion. Shirley tells them she was attacked by the cult. She tells them that she doesn't believe the suspects Levin is after are the real killers.
Wheeler, Delarosa and Parker go to the Limelight. Delarosa tips to get them in. Huebner talks on the phone with his wife as he buys several comic books for his son from a Times Square store. Ajax Cloud meets his British friend Barry and they go see Beckham as Hamilton.
Howell visits Kendricks' room. Kendricks appears to have been working out, but there's no equipment in his room. Howell asks Kendricks to stop fighting with other players. Kendricks agrees. Howell asks Kendricks to do something else.
Game: The Statesmen face the Hawks again. (1st) Harrell Flowers pitches, but he hurts his ankle and Grady Duhart replaces him. The Hawks go up 2-0. Gray gets angry at Huebner, who is in charge of the team's conditioning, for the rash of injuries. Gray threatens to hire someone else to handle conditioning. (5th) Chester makes an error and is pulled from the game. Pulsipher makes an error and HE is pulled from the game. Out of third basemen, Gray makes them put Reeves, an outfielder, at third. Meanwhile, Gus Bennett does well against the Statesmen. Duhart prays to himself and gets out of a tough inning. (7th) Kendricks drives in a run to cut it to 3-1. Pulsipher drives in three runs to give the team a 4-3 lead. (9th) Duhart prays to himself and gets the win.
At the Times Square Dave and Buster's, Bishop is on a date with Betty Billups. She is in town for a modeling gig. He's very good at ski ball, she's not. They get drinks at the bar. McDaris comes into the bar and insults Bishop. Bishop stands up to fight him, but Betty stops him. Lots of people filmed the incident on their phones.
A line of people wait to get into the Limelight. Kendricks and Tina Warren get out of a limo and skip the line. Inside, Kendricks and Tina get lost in very sexy dancing. They take a break in an outdoor courtyard. Kendricks awkwardly compliments her and she thinks he's just trying to get laid. He is very manipulative and she calls him out for it. He says they rushed into it last time and he wants to slow down. She's shocked, but she loosens up. He drops her off at home and leaves.
Eversmith, Cody, Shirley and Chad have moved to a regular table in the basement and are sharing the available evidence. They conclude that they are facing an organized cult. Shirley tells them of the tattoo and Eversmith matches it to the graffiti. Chad uses the Internet to discover the name of the cult is the Order of the Crimson Ram. Shirley shows the connection between the cult and the Florida murders.
Jeremy Spencer walks into the PDDC basement and logs into the Setup with Eversmith's credentials. He uploads a virus to the computer and it shuts down.
O'Reilly and Bill Tucker enter a dark row house. Inside, they find four human heads burning in a fireplace.
Cody and Eversmith go to show Levin their evidence with the Setup. Spencer distances himself from Cody and Eversmith. The Setup doesn't work. Levin gets angry at them for wasting her time.
Applegate uses advanced tech to break into Jamelle Lewis' house and access her laptop. While on her laptop, he discovers information that connects her to something nefarious. He prints evidence and calls Owens to set up a meeting.
Kendricks addresses the players in the locker room. He apologizes for his fights with Whaley and Riggins and promises to do better. He calls on the team to come together and win the championship, but not everyone is enthusiastic about him.
Michael Weisman hosts the Sunday Sports Chat Show with guests: David Tessell, Dwayne McDaris, Jonnie Travis and Edith Merman. Topics include: Is Kendricks the G.O.A.T.? Is Kendricks juicing? Can anyone catch the Statesmen?
Merman thinks Kendricks is doing something special, but other guests don't agree. McDaris is convinced Kendricks is juicing, the others don't seem to think so, even if they have questions. Tessell chats with McDaris and turns over the notes and DNA that Whaley gave him.
Shirley waits for a contact at the Pinch. Applegate is the contact, but he does his best to not be seen talking to her. He leaves Shirley a message with Dan and leaves without directly being seen talking to her. Abraham, the cult member, keeps an eye on them from across the room, but they don't see him. Applegate leaves. Shirley gets the note from Dan. The note has an FTP address and login information. She takes a rideshare home.
Applegate leaves the Pinch and he is followed by Abraham and other cult members. They catch him alone on a side street and kill him to silence him.
Levin tears Eversmith and Cody a new one for failure of the Setup. Spencer shits on how crappy the Setup is. Cody tells Levin they are facing a cult, but Levin very strongly rejects the concept. Anne Snell comes in and says that they have arrested Pervis Till, but not Clifford Myers.
At a press conference, Gray and Kendricks reveal that Kendricks has passed all tests for PEDs, even rare ones.
McDaris sits at home going over the information Tessell gave him. In the background, Brack announces that Kendricks has been cleared of any PED use. McDaris is skeptical. As he reads the documents, his mind starts to put the pieces together, but he's distracted by a news story saying that Kendricks is dating a famous actress, Tina Warren. Warren hasn't dated anyone since she was abused by her husband and divorced. Meaco Ali calls McDaris and they set up a meeting.
Dr. Carter puts Jones on a pitch count and requires him to wear an air cast between starts.
Wheeler, Delarosa and Parker return to the Limelight, but this time Malay, Derby and Shotwell join them. Cloud and Pasco go back to their hotel rooms to soak up the luxury they've never experienced. Pulsipher pays a staffer $400 to take batting practice AFTER the game. Youngblood spends his time at a strip club, where he is recognized by fans. Tannehill messages his family, who miss him and are tired of his long road trips. Huebner listens to a Samuel L. Jackson self-help tape to fall asleep in his hotel room. Jeremy sends a secret message that he's completed his task and that whoever he's talking to can proceed with whatever is next.
