The G.O.A.T., Episode 7, “The Fourth of July All-Star Bash”
Game: The Statesmen visit the Portland Pilots. (1st) Kendricks' first pitch of the game is wild. Another wild pitch leads to a run for the Pilots. Kendricks intentionally walks the next batter and Ferd Langwieler notes that Kendricks has four walks and three wild pitches among the first four batters. (3rd) Kendricks throws two more wild pitches and the Pilots lead 3-0. (5th) Kendricks throws another wild pitch and Gray pulls him. Chaka Purvis comes in and gets a strikeout. The B*stards of Section B cheer on Purvis. (6th) Pulsipher gets a triple and drives in three runs. Brito bloops a single to drive Pulsipher in and give the Statesmen the lead. (9th) Purvis starts to lose it and he's pulled for Youngblood. He's had a great game, though, and gets 11 strikeouts. Youngblood comes in and gets the save with one pitch.
The game is over and a party atmosphere exists in the locker room as players see this as like Spring Break. The Reliever Party Posse is already pre-gaming.
Conan Jones does a commercial for American Oath Mortgage Company. Youngblood appears as well.
On Sports Central, Inesta and Major talk about how great their first date was and flirt some more. Sharon Alligood introduces the All-Star Game starting lineups. The crawl reveals the president launched a Heat Wave Advisory Panel. Ambassador Lopez is ejected from Puerto Rico. Hurricanes start hitting the coast. This world is different: The Oregeon Slam Dunkers win the USBL Finals. Wally West is a star at the X Games. Jennifer Lopez is an ambassador. James Bell wins the Nobel for science. Loki's Love Song is a Broadway show.
Jeffrey Brack opens the NBS News with a list of the murder victims to date: Kaja Ballo, Phil Gale, Joseph Havenith, Bianca Leno, Noah Lofton, Lisa McPherson, Stacy Meyer, Steve Parent, Abbie Peet, Elle Perkins, Herbert Pfaff, Sherry Tate, Kathy Walicki and Sue Walicki.
Shirley Muldoon adds Nellie and Ben Pitezel in Florida to the list of victims. She logs in to the FTP client and finds hundreds of files from PDDC. She starts printing them out. She calls Chad and tells him about the docudump.
Mayor Elizabeth Fair welcomes people to the National Fourth of July Fest, a big concert at Cal Ripken Jr. Stadium. Most of the baseball players who aren't at the All-Star Game are here. Speck leads Cloud, Gay and Bishop to the team's luxury box. Pasco leaves, with the party being too much for him. Bishop starts getting drunk with Speck, Pasco, Derby and Wheeler.
Bishop goes down to the festival, with a hot sweaty crowd dancing to EDM. Bishop joins them and meets Karyn L., they dance and he takes her to the team's luxury box. Speck invites them into the private room. They join Speck, Delarosa, Shotwell and Wheeler, who are doing coke. They offer coke to Karyn L. and she says yes. Bishop feels pressured and caves and joins them. Bishop and Karyn L. have sex in a private bathroom. Afterwards, a drunk and high Bishop staggers around and sees Dwayne McDaris. He tries to attack McDaris, but is too intoxicated.
Eversmith and Cody learn that Captain Levin is going to interrogate suspect Pervis Till and they are certain his rights will be violated. Levin tells Purvis they have evidence to connect him to the murders, but he says he had nothing to do with it. Levin tries to get him to finger the other suspect, Myers. Levin shows Till bloody pictures of the victims and Till recoils as if it's the first time he's seen them. Levin ignores the red flags and manipulates Till. She throws out a photo of victim Elle Perkins, who Till knew through a day labor company. He's definitely connected to her and he's worried about Levin digging for more info, so he tells her where Myers is.
Tina Warren made dinner for Cam Kendricks and as they finish, Tina gets a call. After the call, she is upset after talking to her mother. Kendricks doesn't listen or ask for more information, instead, he starts telling his own story of his dysfunctional family, one-upping her. He continues to one-up her until she gets upset enough to ask him to leave.
Cody talks to Eversmith on the phone as she checks off a list of locations Levin gave her. Cody enters a house on her list and is followed by a Shadowy Figure who attacks her. She wrestles free and shoots at him, but he gets away.
Mayor Elizabeth Fair pulls up to City Hall in a limo, riding with the same Shadowy Figure that previously met with Lewis. The Figure is paying Fair to make sure that everything stays open and that baseball continues to be played.
USBL President Mary Billups defends the continuation of baseball in the light of recent violence. She introduces the participants in the home run contest. Alda hits 18 home runs. Franklin hits 23 home runs. Power hits 17 home runs. Bennett hits 31. Kendricks hits 38 home runs. Franklin confronts him in the dugout about cheating. Bennett breaks them up.
For the All-Star Game, Owens has invited the press to sit in her luxury box. Billups attends as well. Merman asks Billups about the investigation into the Statesmen-Colonials brawl, but Billups says no further charges will be pursued. Billups checks her bank account, which has a $100k deposit from an unknown source.
In the concourse, Albert Whaley happens upon David Tessell. Whaley confronts him and asks why Tessell hasn't done anything about the Kendricks information he passed along. Tessell said it wasn't a story. Whaley gets angry. Sharon Alligood arrives and Whaley is distracted. Tessell threatens to call the cops. Alligood asks Whaley a tough question on the record and Whaley walks away. Tessell calls the police anyway.
Fans on their way to the game: Schmitty gets away from his large, busy family. Nickie and Robert meet for their first date. Bart and his daughter Mary head to the game after going to the Museum of Natural History. A group of Karens throws a Bachelorette Party at the Pinch for Kristy K., who lusts after Kendricks. The Bro Squad pre-games in the stadium parking lot. It's Monroe's birthday and he loves baseball, even if the other bros don't.
Game: The Statesmen host the All-Star Game. (1st) Bennett hits a home run to give the East a 1-0 lead. Kendricks isn't impressed with Bennett and the Colonials players Adams and Kennedy confront him in the dugout. Adams steps up to fight him, but Youngblood calms him down because it's the All-Star Game. Kendricks recognizes the danger and backs down. (4th) Kendricks strikes out to Mulaney. (5th) Playing first, Kendricks makes an error that leads to a run for the West. (6th) Mulaney gets Kendricks to fly out with runners in scoring position, another failure. (9th) The East leads 4-3, but West player Duncan drives in two runs to give the West the victory.
Fans at the game: Schmitty and his drinking buddies sit at the restaurant in center field. Nickie and Robert are on the "Kiss Cam" and it's bad. Bart switches seats with Mary so she can see better. A foul ball comes her way and a drunken man leans to get it from the section above. He falls and Bart steps in his way and flips him down into another group of fans. Mary gets the foul ball. Kristy K. and the Karens brainstorm about how to meet the players. Karyn L. knows where they will be because she hooked up with Bishop. The Bro Squad are secretly drinking in the stadium and they notice the Karens.
After the game, Alligood interviews Kendricks. He's not into it and cusses on the air. She gets upset and is about to tear him a new one, but Youngblood shows up and saves Kendricks, who walks away.
Fans after the game: Schmitty's drinking buddies try to get him to stay out and party. He sees a happy family and decides to go home to his own family instead. Robert walks Nickie home and they both agree that the date was bad and they shouldn't do it again. Bart tells Mary they only have time to get autographs from one player and she wants Savoy Bishop. Kristy K. and the Karens are at the Pinch, flirting with the Reliever Party Patrol. Bishop is drunk and Karyn L. tries to get him to help them find Cam. Bishop feels guilty and leaves. Cho from the Bro Squad and Karen K. make out. Speck buys the Bro Squad drinks and they love him for it.
Janice Taylor is watching Sports Cental and sees Albert Whaley. She freaks out and calls her union rep, Monika Aro. They set up a meeting.
Ashley Hernandez leads a press conference and announces roster changes: Harrell Flowers is injured and out for the season. He will be replaced by Melvin Rodgers. Chuck Chester and Kit Riggins have been traded for Gus Bennett.
Alton Nix gets pressured about fixing his screw-up on TV. He says he's going to launch a full investigation into Kendricks.
Owens meets with Manda Starr, president of the Carmesi Molto Corp, which owns Hater-Ade. She complains that Kendricks' commercial for ThunderBrew violates their contracts. To Owens' shock, Starr offers to buy the Statesmen from her. Owens can name her own price. Starr leaves the offer on the table.
At home, Whaley is visited by officers Anne Snell and Steven Beck. He acts nervous as they question him about his interaction with Tessell. He lies and gets caught and he admits him. He denies that he threatened Tessell and says he approached him about a story, but that Tessell killed the story. Whaley says he only expressed displeasure about it. The officers are skeptical, but leave him.
Shirley brings her notes to editor Simon Meyers, but he makes it VERY clear there are no cults in Washington, D.C. and kicks her out of the office. Shirley vows to find another way to print the story. She goes to Chad and has him show her how to set up a secret website where her identity can't be traced.
Owens questions Gray about his players using steroids, particularly Kendricks. Gray rejects it and notes that adding Kendricks to the team was her idea. Owens calls Applegate, but he doesn't answer. She talks to Mackey, but he also hasn't heard from Applegate.
Michael Weisman hosts the Sunday Sports Chat Show with guests Tessell, Alligood, Womble and Merman. Topics include: What is the point of the All-Star Game? Without McDaris around to monopolize the debate, are the Statesmen for real? Is corruption growing in the USBL and beyond?
The Statesmen have slowed down and have only gone 18-10 in July. Overall, though, they're 76-30, which is great. Cam Kendricks' latest feat is scoring a run in 24 consecutive games.
Dwayne McDaris privately interviews Meaco Ali. Ali knew Kendricks in Akron long ago. They were boxers who worked and trained at Spike Johnson's gym. Ali knew him not as Kendricks, but as Dan Cooper. McDaris finds limited information about Dan Cooper online. Cooper was going to go pro, he was 10-0, then he disappeared. Ali is clearly drunk and starts to pass out. McDaris says they should talk again, but Ali says no. McDaris offers him cash for the next meeting and Ali agrees for $100. McDaris has to give Ali $20 before he leaves.
Bishop sits at home drinking, wracked with guilt because of the music festival. Betty drops by to see him, but he pretends not to be home and she leaves.
Tucker, O'Reilly and other cops arrive at Clifford Myers' home and break into the door. He tries to shoot them, but they gun him down, shooting him in the back. Eversmith says the Setup is working again, but doesn't believe that Levin will pay attention anyway. Levin asks Tucker and O'Reilly if they took care of Myers. They say they did.
Ashley Hernandez and Alfredo Brito are on a date when she gets a call. It's Jamelle Lewis who tells Hernandez that Kendricks' commercial with ThunderBrew violates the exclusivity clause in their contract with Hater-Ade. Ashley's in trouble. She goes home with Brito, they are a happy couple.
Owens watches the movie Major League and realizes Gray was making fun of her.
Lewis watches Entertainment News Network with reporter Rachel Brosh, who reports on Cam Kendricks and Tina Harris being the next big celebrity couple.
Cody and Eversmith arrive at Rock Creek Park, which is a massive crime scene with police cars, media and crowds. Snell has seen the crime scene and warns them it's the most gruesome thing she's seen in relation to the case. Tucker says the press already has the story. Levin has the four officers clear the press out of the crime scene.
Jeffrey Brack reports of a large ritualistic murder. Lewis sees the news report and turns it off and walks away oddly.
