“The G.O.A.T.,” Episode 8: “Twi-Night Double Header”
Harold Gray, Alvin Huebner and Vernon Howell tell Cam Kendricks that they're pulling him from the pitching rotation for pooer performance. Kendricks tries to argue, but they tell him he can work with Howell and earn his way back into the rotation. Kendricks says that if he can't pitch, he won't hit either. Gray benches him. Huebner doesn't like it.
Game: (1, 1st) The Statesmen host the Philadelphia Porters. Sharon Alligood interviews pitcher Melvin Rodgers. The team went 19-8 for the month and have won 95 games. Rodgers is happy to be back with the team. The B*stards of Section B explain what a twi-night double header is. Winston Pulsipher starts instead of Kendricks. Rodgers gets an easy one-two-three inning to start the game.
The Statesmen perform an original rap song, "Get That Ring." It's not good.
On Sports Central, Inesta Morgan and Major Sumrell make fun of the "Get That Ring" video. They flirt heavily and speak happily about their recent dates. The crawl reveals that the president suspended all travel to Puerto Rico and has started campaigning for re-election. VA Secretary Tim Whitman has been reported missing. This world is different: Black Sheep Contingent is an important band. Seth Rogen is good at golf. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is a superspreader event. Japan wins the Little League World Championship.
Jeffrey Brack reports that a coup has taken place in Puerto Rico and pro-independence forces have taken power. Brack interviews White House Senior Strategist David Lynch.
Captain Alex Levin leads a briefing, but it's more private that previous ones, only PDDC officers. Levin says that they have to stop any leaks and that leakers will be fired and prosecuted. They did a lock down on the most recent mass murder scene and they covered it up by pretending it was a movie set. No photos or videos escaped the scene. The police shooting of Clifford Myers has been kept completely secret, with not even the briefing being told. Levin says that Myers is still at large. Cody notices O'Reilly and Tucker acting suspicious.
Game: (1, 3rd) Savoy Bishop walks to get on base. Huebner talks to bench coach Craig Glover about problems with Gray's coaching. Winston Pulsipher drives in three runs. He's been hitting .423 over the last month. Gray notes that Whaley didn't show up or call.
Shirley sits at the Pinch writing an anonymous blog called "From the Potomac." The article reveals that a Satanic cult, "The Order of the Crimson Ram.," is active in D.C. and Florida. It was formed by Holmes Mudgett in 1896 and was originally a fraternal organization. Around the time of World War II, it became an anarchist, Satanic cult. She says that the cult has killed more than 30 people in the D.C. area and in Florida, which includes the latest crime scene, which the public isn't supposed to know about. She calls on law enforcement and the media to do their jobs.
Shirley visits Chad and they talk about the FTP documents. Among them are numerous reports that Tucker has used excessive force multiple times and maybe falsified evidence against Black people. There is also evidence that more documents will be coming in a week.
Jamelle Lewis asks Ashley Hernandez what happened with the ThunderBrew commercial. Hernandez said that she triple-checked everything. She says she'll check again and will get all the contracts and check again. Lewis says that it doesn't really matter, just make sure that the ThunderBrew commercials end.
Alton Nix meets with Mary Billups. She double checks that Nix has done a full backgrounder on Kendricks and he has. Kendricks' background is sparse, but Nix says he's fully clean and on the up-and-up. Billups says she wants a lot more tests. Nix isn't happy.
Maya Marin, Tina Warren's good friend, watches ENN and sees a report on Kendricks and Warren going out and she balks. She calls Tina and confirms they aren't dating. Maya then calls the Washington Gazette and says she has a gossip story about Kendricks and is directed towards Shirley. ENN reports about a mother, Monica Rassi, asking her daughter, Leila, to leave the Order of the Crimson Ram.
Game (1, 7th) Rodgers faces bases loaded with no outs, but he stays in. He concentrates and gets a double play ball. Then he gets a fly out, but the score is now 3-1.
McDaris releases a web video claiming that Cam Kendricks is a fraud. He teases that he has documents to prove it and he'll lay it out in future videos. He reveals that he got documents from Albert Whaley. Whaley is watching on TV and gets upset that his name was used. He starts packing.
Harold Gray and the coaches bring Whaley into the office and show video of him stealing files and Kendricks' underwear. Whaley is released from the team outright.
Leah Owens meets with Lekebra Benjamin and tells her of the offer from Manda Starr and Carmesi Molto to buy the team. Owens didn't jump on the offer, which baffles Benjamin. Owens has been watching the team and is starting to enjoy it. Benjamin says if Owens DOES sell the team, she will quit.
Cam Kendricks visits Tina Warren's mansion, with her friend Maya Marin hanging out. Tina won't let Kendricks in. He tries to apologize, but she refuses. He tries to grab her, but she pulls away and locks him out. Kendricks sits in his car and waits for Maya to lave. Once she leaves, Kendricks goes back to Tina's house.
McDaris does as much research on Kendricks as possible, but can't find much. He traces Dan Cooper to Akron and Spike Johnson's gym. McDaris calls Johnson and learns that there is a box of Kendricks' possessions still there, but McDaris will have to come see them in person.
Game: (1, 9th) Rodgers still holds on to a 3-1 lead. The bases are loaded with one out. Rodgers gets a double play ball and Gus Bennett easily gets the outs. Complete game victory. Kendricks didn't play, which snaps his streak of reaching base in 83 consecutive games, one short of the all-time record. Huebner attempts to talk to Langwieler about doing something about Gray, but Glover warns him not to and he backs off.
Gray sends Ajax Cloud to the minors, but says he shouldn't have to be there too long. Kendricks visits Gray between games and apologizes for his ultimatum before Game 1. Gray thanks him, but says he won't be starting in game 2, but will pinch hit, if needed. Kendricks will work with Howell to make his way back into the Statesmen rotation.
Meaco Ali visits a dark alley and meets cult member Abraham. Abraham gives Ali an envelope of money to be quiet and warns him to leave town.
Eversmith and Cody use The Setup to connect the latest murder to the earlier ones, but they struggle. They discuss Shirley's article, suggesting that either Shirley or Chad wrote it, but they think it's no big deal. Eversmith remembers that the skate park murders were different than the others by being more bloody and quickly done. But why? Jeremy Spencer drops in to make fun of The Setup and to tell them that a second severed head was found at the crime scene where only one had previously been found. Eversmith and Cody find the cult logo at the latest crime scene, carved into a tree.
Nix learns that Kendricks, once again, has beaten all the drug tests. He calls Mary Billups and gloats. Billups grants that Kendricks is clean and Nix demands that she apologize and leave the players alone or there will be legal action or a strike. Billups is hesitant, but she doesn't want those things, so she agrees.
Janice Taylor meets with her union rep Monika Aro. Janice reports her run-in with Whaley. Monika takes it seriously and calls HR for the Statesmen, only to find out that Whaley has been let go. Janice now fears for her safety, but Monika says she'll take care of it.
Michael Weisman hosts the Sunday Sports Chat Show with guests David Tessell, Sharon Alligood, Jonnie Travis and Edith Merman. Topics include: Is Cam Kendricks the MVP? Are the Statesmen unbeatable now that they have Gus Bennett? Is Harold Gray manager of the year?
McDaris releases another web video, saying that Whaley wasn't his only source. He reveals that he had met Meaco Ali, but that Ali has disappeared. He shows a photo of Ali and says he'll be searching for Ali.
Eversmith and Cody meet with Levin, laying out the evidence for the cult. Levin rejects the evidence angrily and says she has submitted paperwork to discipline the two of them. She asks them if they wrote "From the Potomac," which they deny. She doesn't believe they are unconnected to the blog, though, because it has info that was only available to the police. She threatens to fire them if they are the leakers.
Maya finally gets in touch with Shirley and they talk abut Kendricks and Tina. Maya stays off the record, because she's scared. She tells Shirley that Kendricks and Tina aren't really dating, they only went on a few dates. Maya confirms that Kendricks is an asshole and Shirley asks to quote her, but Maya is scared and says no.
Game: (2, 4th) Game 2 of the double header. Luis Narvaez pitches for the Porters with a 2-0 lead. He gets Doster out, which makes him 0-6 on the day. Huebner gives him the rest of the day off and brings in Gay. Doster hits the showers. Kimbell joins him and they have sex. Howell goes into his office to get an apple and sees Doster and Kimbell, but it's no big deal.
Officers Bill Tucker and Mitchell O'Reilly visit Whaley's apartment, but he's not home. They suggest that might be to his best advantage.
Jones has Bishop over for a barbecue and drinks. Jones' injury seems to be getting worse. Betty calls, but Bishop ignores her. Jones asks Bishop about it and he says that he hooked up with another woman. Jones asks if they are married or dating and since they aren't, Jones tells Bishop to get over himself and go see Betty.
Cody and Eversmith approach a dark alley, checking out a potential lead. In a dumpster, they find Applegate's dead body. Abraham and a group of cult members arrive and chase them from the alley.
Game: (2, 5th) Jones stands on the mound and his elbow hurts. He uses Vaseline and the hitter grounds into a double play. The Porters still lead 2-0.
Billups and Nix give a press conference to clear Kendricks from any PEDs or other drugs. Nix calls the whole thing persecution. Billups rejects the persecution claim, but admits Kendricks is clean.
Hernandez gets an anonymous video sent to her e-mail. She opens it up and it shows Kendricks hitting Tina Warren. Then she runs him out of the house with a shotgun. Hernandez shows the video to Lekebra Benjamin. Benjamin says she'll take care of it and brushes Hernandez off.
Game: (2, 7th) Jones is pulled from the game and replaced by Shawn Derby. The game is tied 2-2. Derby gives up a run. Huebner talks to Howell about doing something about Gray. Howell rebuffs him and says Huebner should be careful what he says.
Snell confronts Cody in the parking lot, vaguely threatening Cody to back off. Snell tries to falsely butter Cody up, but Cody angrily rejects her. Snell threatens Cody again, but backs down when Cody implies she'll use physical force.
The Order of the Crimson Ram owns and runs the Red Sheep Ranch, which has a Wellness and Fulfillment Center. Inside that building, members of the cult gather for a ceremony. The cult only has white men, but the women are of any race and there are trans women. The oldest member, Ishmael, complains about the cult's robes. Esau and Jacob are the ones who forgot Applegate's body. Applegate is the Vessel. Jacob is a rookie and Esau is training him. Abraham says they are in trouble. Abraham begins a ceremony called the Arc of the Angel. Ishmael repeats the six virtues of the order: Purity, hedonism, masculinity, money, freedom and anarchy and expresses each of them visually, as he has risen to the sixth level of the sixth circle of the cult. Abraham uses a laser scalpel to sever Applegate's head.
Game (2, 9th) Narvaez strikes Kendricks out. Narvaez is pulled from the game for Hemsley. Bennett hits a bases-clearing triple to give the Statesmen a 5-3 lead. Narvaez congratulates Jones on the win and Jones gets Vaseline on his hand. Narvaez notices it, but doesn't realize what it is. Narvaez doesn't notice, but Jones does and is conflicted.
Owens learns that Applegate is dead and his body is missing. She'll have to find other ways to dig into Lewis.
Kendricks does another commercial for ThunderBrew. Manda Starr sees the commercial and immediately calls Leah Owens.
Doctors Green and Carter tell Gray and Howell that Jones is injured and will have to go on the disabled list for at least two weeks.
