Willie Jackson looks into the mirror, unhappily. He examines his teeth and notices that one wobbles too much. He inspects his hairline and and pulls away a tuft of hair. He gets ready and leaves.
Willie limps to his rusty old truck and he can barely open the door. He gits end and drives through central Florida. He keeps the speed limit as he drives into Brooksville. The city population sign has been crossed out and spray-painted with a big zero. Willie is the only living thing in the area: no people, no animals.
Willie drives into the city of Ridge Manor, moving past a bunch of houses and stores all with a big black X spray-painted on the doors. Just before leaving the city, he turns down a side road. He follows it to a dirt road and then a gate. He uses bolt cutters to take the chain off the gate and he drives down the dirt road.
Willie parks in front of a one-story house. He pulls out a shotgun and a bullhorn. He blows the horn to see if anyone is home. No one is. He goes inside, shotgun first.
Willie carries a box of cans and boxes of food and puts it in the back of the truck. It joins a bunch of other boxes filled with liquor, books, clothes, etc. He gets the shotgun and puts it back in the truck, then he spray paints a big X on the front door of the house and drives away.
On the way back, Willie stops and paints a big zero on the population sign for Ridge Manor.
Willie returns to Spring Hill, where his trailer is, but instead of going home, he drives into the city. He stops at Kinney's Garage, a place that used to work on broken-down American cars, refurbishing them.
He goes inside and stops at the time clock. He gets a hammer and destroys the clock. He throws the hammer at the front window, shattering it. He cheers and then gets the spray paint from his truck. He writes "I quit" on the front door and leaves.
Willie goes to Nellie's Diner, goes inside and makes himself eggs and meat. The power is still on. He goes to the cooler to get some beer and drinks while he cooks and eats.
The next morning, Willie checks himself out in the mirror again. He's lost more hair now. The loose tooth from yesterday falls out of his mouth. He throws it in the toilet and flushes, but the tooth doesn't go down.
He goes back into the kitchen and grabs his last beer. He starts drinking when the lights go out. He walks outside to find that the generator is out of gas and his last gas can is empty.
Willie goes to a Hogly Wogly gas station and refills his gas cans. He tries to fill up the truck, but the pumps are empty.
Willie drives to the nearby Publix. He goes inside and gets more beer. And a bottle of whiskey. He takes a drink from the whiskey and drives to the Best Buy.
He searches around the store until he finds DVDs for "Tales from the Crypt." He notices that he's starting to look like the Crypt Keeper. He takes those DVDs and selects some others.
Willie makes himself some food at Nellie's Diner. He pays when he leaves, even though he's alone. He sits on the hood of his truck sipping beer. He stares at the public library across the parking lot and decides to go in. He searches around inside until he finds the book “Night,” by Elie Wiesel. He looks through it until he finds the pictures, which look a lot like he does now. He leaves the book and spits out another tooth as he heads back to his truck.
The next morning, Willie stares in the mirror and he has less hair and fewer teeth. He sits in his recliner, drinking beer and watching "The Day After Tomorrow." The movie is over and Willie has finished off his case of beer. He hated the movie and breaks the DVD in half.
Willie drives along Highway 19, the Crystal River nuclear power plant in the background. He stops at a classic car lot and finds the car he likes, a 1964 Mustang 289. He attaches it to a trailer and pulls it home behind his truck.
The next morning, Willie stares at himself in the mirror. He only has patches of hair left, a few more teeth are gone and his face is thinner. He spits a tooth into the toilet where it joins the others.
Willie goes back to bed and falls asleep. Later, he's working on the Mustang. He tries to start it, but it doesn't work. He goes back inside and falls asleep in his recliner.
He wakes up and it's dark outside. He gets up from the recliner, trips and falls face first. He loses several more teeth. He picks up a bottle of vodka and takes a swig.
Outside, Willie struggles to get to the truck and get in. He drinks some more vodka and drives to Auto Zone. He rushes inside and comes back out carrying a starter in a box.
He takes a sip of vodka and drops the bottle. He steps around the glass to get into the truck and that's when he sees the lights. They could be a car or truck or plane or space craft, he's too drunk and out of his mind to be able to tell.
Willie slides down towards the ground as he watches the lights go by. He cuts his hand on the broken vodka bottle and looks down at the wound. When he looks back up, the lights are gone. He climbs back into the truck and rummages around until he finds a bottle of whiskey. He takes a sip and uses the rest to clean his wound. It hurts a lot and he passes out.
The next morning, Willie wakes up in his truck. He looks into the mirror and notices that he's almost completely bald and has nothing left of his teeth except stumps. He looks around the truck, but can't find any alcohol.
He remembers the lights. He reaches into the glove box and pulls out a .44 Magnum. he loads it and drives off.
Willie drives around looking for the lights, but he doesn't find anything. At dusk, he goes to the Rocky Top Liquor shop and gets more vodka.
Willie pulls into the parking lot of the Winn-Dixie on Highway 19. He gets out of the truck and the lights of the alien spaceship light him up from behind. He turns and points the .44 towards the lights. Two aliens in space suits step through the light and try to talk to him, but he doesn't understand them. He opens fire on the aliens, emptying three rounds into each.
As he moves closer, the alien spaceship is revealed to be nothing but a Hummer. The aliens in space suits are humans in hazmat suits. They are dead. Willie doesn't see them like they really are, he thinks he killed aliens.
Willie spits on the corpses. He hops in his truck drives away.
